Review Live It Like You Love It / The Charlatans:

Live It Like You Love It was recorded at Manchester's Evening News Arena in December 2001 and, sadly, it's only die-hard completists or people who were there and want a souvenir of this particular concert who are likely to think that the gamble has paid off. For as erratic a live group as the Charlatans, any sort of live album was always going to be a risk-never mind one recorded in one night, rather than culled from the highlights of a tour. The Charlatans' best moments on record are always those in which inventiveness in the studio has redeemed their otherwise pedestrian musical imaginations, to say nothing of rendering presentable Tim Burgess's affecting but limited voice-think of the Isaac Hayes guitars on "The Only One I Know", or the luxuriant washes of multi-tracked guitar that made the whole of Tellin' Stories such a joy. In concert, the Charlatans have sometimes been able to make up for the exposure of their limitations by engendering a sense of giddy communal uplift, but it doesn't translate at all to record-the band sound like they're playing two rooms along down the hall, and when Burgess's singing coincides with the melody, it's only due to the law of averages. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Jane's Addiction (Live) / Jane's Addiction:

In an unusual move for a new band, this self-titled live set was the first album released by LA scene darlings Jane's Addiction. Recorded at Hollywood's famous Roxy, it's mostly noteworthy for capturing the unique energy of a band that's playing a club setting while getting ready to launch onwards to bigger and bolder things. This version of their classic signature tune "Jane Says" would become the definitive one, though it and "Pigs in Zen" would both be re-recorded for their first proper studio album, Nothing's Shocking. Beyond that, "Whores" shows off the band's metal side, "I Would for You" shows off their trippier side and "Trip Away" manages to combine the two. -Robert Burrow.

Review Live at Wembley 1986 / Queen:

It's doubtful whether Queen would have been able to sell out Wembley stadium prior to their Live Aid performance. A year later though, it made perfect sense to return to the scene of that famous victory, if only to finish the job off. Inevitably, many of the greatest moments of this double CD will already be familiar: the Nuremberg-style clapping on "Radio Ga Ga", the bowel shaking "We Will Rock You" and the silly-yet-moving "We Are the Champions". Over two hours though, you can really be audacious. And Freddie Mercury, a man not known for his restraint, clearly understood his role. "Hey Big Spender", in particular, is a gas-as is "I Want To Break Free", assisted by 72,000 eager backing vocalists. Best of all, though, is the finale. With every song a drama in itself, it takes something a bit special to conclude a Queen show. Hence a quite Freddie-tastic "God Save the Queen". Truly, we may never see their like again. [+]

Review 5 Live 01 / The Stranglers:

The story of the Stranglers is one of unlikely survival and ultimate triumph in the face of overwhelming adversity. Twenty-seven years after their first rehearsals above an off-licence in Guildford comes Five Live. Recorded at unspecified shows in 1999 and tidied up (one suspects) in the studio afterwards, Five Live finds capable new guitar recruit Baz Warne (formerly of Smalltown Heroes), singer Paul Roberts (who replaced Hugh Cornwell in 1990) and the traditional axis of Black, Burnel and Greenfield launching through depleted-uranium-tipped versions of "Golden Boy", "No More Heroes" and "Something Better Change" while still catering to their prettier side with such inevitables as "Golden Brown" and the Gallic-tinged croon pop of "Lies and Deception". Bass turned up loud, keyboards all over the shop-just like old times, almost. -Kevin Maidment.
