Review Live at Earls Court / Morrissey:Claiming that "It's either this or prison" but nevertheless capping his most successful solo year thus far, Morrissey performed to 17,183 of his faithful fans at London's Earls Court in December 2004 in a manner (Morrissey's name in big red lightbulbs) intended to invoke Elvis' 1968 comeback special. Thankfully, as Live At Earls Court testifies, Morrissey's life purpose is better served by rock than the jailhouse. Eremitic melancholia, mordant badinage and rancorous avengement. Nobody does it better. In fact, nobody other than Morrissey does it at all. Whether bemoaning surplus hormones on the breathtakingly immodest "I Have Forgiven Jesus" or wishing-rather self-servingly-that he'd been fashionably martyred in the Bavarian snow along with the Busby Babes, Morrissey never fails to raise an eyebrow. He may have spent his formative years with "three incredibly miserable people" but The Smiths' music endures, herein with slight concessions to modernity; Joan Of Arc now owns a melting iPod on "Bigmouth Strikes Again". Many of the titles are taken from the platinum-selling You Are The Quarry. Even the b-sides are grand. "Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice" sounds like The Pixies gone transsexual. Review Ever After: Live / The Mission UK:Ever After-Live was recorded on the Mission's 1999 reunion tour (annoyingly, and sloppily, the sleeve credits do not make it clear whether it is a document of one concert, or a collection of highlights from several). In his own brief sleevenotes, the Mission's frontman, Wayne Hussey, admits that the tour was largely an exercise in nostalgia (the Mission did not ask their fanatically ardent fanbase to fidget impatiently through any new material) but makes a touchingly candid justification for his decision to sign up for it: "The thought persisted. that maybe I wouldn't ever get the chance to do this again. " Ever After-Live, then, is the sound of this legendarily bibulous group raging against the ultimate closing time. To anyone who wasn't a card-carrying member of the formidable wandering tribe that followed the Mission all over Europe in the late 1980s, they presented a curious spectacle: both band and fans were participants in a conspiracy to treat the Mission's music with a reverence that verged on the preposterous, while simultaneously treating every other aspect of the rock & roll life as the colossal joke it is. It made the Mission impossible to dislike-people who didn't enjoy the music still relished the interviews. Ever After-Live is the Mission performing a series of crowd favourites in grimly straight-faced poets-of-darkness mode and will therefore be of interest principally to those who spent some portion of their adolescence dressed like a cousin of the Addams family. Everyone else should at least enjoy the spirited cover versions at the end-Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love", Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane", the Stooges' "1969" and a terrific slap at the Osmonds' "Crazy Horses".
