Review The Doors - Live in Hollywood: Highlights from the Aquarius Theatre Performances / The Doors:Although the cover to Live In Hollywood shows a slim-line and cleanshaven Jim Morrison shoehorned into the tightest leather trousers legally available, the truth was, that by the time of these performances on Sunset Boulevard (July 21st 1969 to be precise), Mr Mojo had become a rambling bearbellied beardy whose taste for liquor and ladies-not to mention an on-stage propensity for stroaking goats and undoing his flies-was apparently getting in the way of what was being said into the microphone. Mindful that the tapes were rolling during these shows (The Doors' were preparing their Absolutely Live album, subsequently released in 1970 and long out-of-print), Morrison restrained himself from asking members of the crowd to "love my ass", although Ray Manzareks' vocal stretch on the underwhelming blues-by-numbers "Close To You " and an unexplained instrumental version of "Peace Frog" must have given the old miscreant an opportunity to nip out for a quick spot of depravity. In fact, these mixing-desk quality performances-part of a long series of unreleased live shows being personally vetted and released by the three surviving members of the band-find The Doors at the height of their self-discipline. Even if the live renditions never come close to the venomous dread of the original studio versions ("Break On Through", as ever, is the most glaring casualty) 13 hypnotic minutes of "Light My Fire", the apocalytical rock poetry of "When The Music's Over" and the undervalued blues-waltz of "Universal Mind" all show why The Doors' legend is in no danger of slamming shut in the faces of future rock generations. -Kevin Maidment.

Review I Ought to Give You a Shot in the Head for Making Me Live in This Dump / Shivaree:Though the American alternative country scene has provided a disproportionate number of reasons to believe that American rock, after grunge, is not completely dead in the water, it can also become hidebound by its adherence to the traditions it was founded on. The truly great bands from this sector-Sparklehorse, Lambchop-have shown a willingness to introduce a certain feral modernism into proceedings, and Shivaree, from Virginia via California, merit serious comparison with either of them. Shivaree are a three-piece revolving around the singing and songwriting of the truly fantastically named Ambrosia Parsley, who clearly thinks as highly of Jane Siberry and Mary Margaret O'Hara as she ever did of Patsy Cline or Margo Timmins. The songs on I Oughtta Give You A Shot In The Head. are oblique, meandering, but insidiously tuneful creations which lapse into Sheryl Crow territory once or twice (specifically, "Daring Lousy Guy" and "Pimp") but are mostly arrestingly great. It is to be hoped there will be much more where this fine debut came from. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Dream Letter - Live In London 1968 / Tim Buckley:It's been said that Tim Buckley was the most powerful singer of his generation. Even if that appraisal forgets Bob Dylan, the live set Dream Letter makes a hell of a defence. At the very least, his voice could do things few could: it soared beyond any familiar register and held notes long past the breaking point. He learned from jazz vocalists such as Sarah Vaughn, but he put technical prowess into the service of a strange, trance-like state. On this evening, before a hushed, receptive audience, he seemed to be composing visionary poetry with every vocal surge. Creating an Astral Weeks-like sound, his band included Lee Underwood on guitar, David Friedman on vibes and Danny Thompson on bass.
