Review Live At The Fillmore East 1970: Special Edition CD+DVD Combo-Pak / Neil Young:For years, fans of Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been waiting for an official chance to hear Crazy Horse live with original leader Danny Whitten, the insanely talented guitarist who died of a heroin overdose in late 1972, inspiring Tonight's the Night. Tuned-in fans have been awaiting this very set for at least a dozen years, as it was originally to be tacked onto the end of a Decade-style triple CD of outtakes. Thankfully, this well-recorded live set from the infamous Fillmore East was well worth the wait. Here are scorching, extended takes of "Down by the River," "Winterlong," and "Cowgirl in the Sand," each propelled by guitar interplay so delightful you have to keep rewinding to hear it again. In fact, bits of it seem to prefigure the ways that Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine would feed off each other in the band Television, only with less of a sweet edge. But the world doesn't need any more arguments that Young was a proto-punk; what the world does need is at least a dozen more releases from Neil's archives! And hopefully, with this awesome live album, the floodgates have truly been opened and there are many more to come, in the vein of Dylan's Bootleg series. This disc is worth it alone for the version of "Wondering," a tune not officially recorded until many years later in Neil's weird '80s rockabilly phase. -Mike McGonigal.

Review Just An American Boy: the Audio Documentary - Live / Steve Earle:Just an American Boy is a double-album soundtrack of Amos Poe's DVD documentary of Steve Earle touring in the United States and Canada in late 2002 and early 2003; most of the tracks were taken from two performances-in Toronto and in Bloomington, Indiana. Earle has not always had a straightforward relationship with his audiences-standing up in front of southern country crowds and proselytising against the death penalty isn't the easiest way to sell T-shirts-but it must have been doubly strange for a man of Earle's generally liberal sensibilities to be on the road after September 11, 2001. There weren't many people who wanted to hear a vaguely sympathetic song about Marin County Mujahid John Walker Lindh, but Earle wrote one and sang it (the title of this set is the opening line of "John Walker's Blues"). Just an American Boy includes many Steve Earle standards (among them "Copperhead Road", "Guitar Man" and a terrific "Christmas in Washington"), a rousing version of Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding" and several of Earle's lengthy between-song digressions on subjects ranging from capital punishment to trade unions. (The latter are much less of a trial than speeches by rock stars tend to be. ) Earle's monologues are as neatly constructed as his songs, and there's more than a hint of his fellow Texan, the great Bill Hicks, in his accent and bleak wit. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Live at Knebworth / Robbie Williams:Robbie Williams Live at Knebworth is a lasting souvenir of the biggest ever live music event that the UK had ever seen, when in Summer 2003 some 375,000 people made their way to Knebworth to let Mr Williams entertain them. Recorded over the three nights, it doesn't contain the full two-hour set list and even dares to leave out some of the live favourites such as "Rock DJ" and "No Regrets", so doesn't quite count as a comprehensive "Best of". However, it does include the majority of his finest moments-from the full-on regular opening number "Let Me Entertain You", to the tingling hairs on the back of your neck-quality of "Angels" via such crowd pleasers as "Kids" and "Feel". As with all live albums, it's never going to sound as clean as the studio versions, and there are bum notes and unexpected ad-libs, but to their credit the compilers have kept the inter song banter to a minimum so the listener is spared most of the cheesy humility served up in abundance on the nights. For those that attended, this will be an essential purchase as a lasting souvenir of a memorable day. For anyone else, they'd probably be better off waiting for the proper best of that will no doubt come out eventually. -Melanie Wilkin.

Review Live: And All That It Could Have Been / Nine Inch Nails:The biggest difference between a kick-ass studio album and a kick-ass live album? Intensity. And All That Could Have Been, recorded on Nine Inch Nails' 2000 "Fragility 2. 0" US tour, provides that trait in abundance. It helps that Trent Reznor has a band, instead of just a battery of keyboards, to help him work through 16 tracks of the raging yet surprisingly listenable musical vitriol that made him a star. The live musicians, who allow him some freedom to play with tempo, help kick "Closer" up a notch and lend some atmospheric weight to a slow version of "The Frail". The band rips into older material with gusto; Reznor sounds just as pissed off performing "Head Like a Hole" as he did in 1989. The CD closes with "Hurt", which might seem like an odd choice, but somehow, after everything that's come before, it's like the denouement of a tragedy. While a CD can only capture a piece of NIN's onstage energy, their first live album is an intense, sometimes overwhelming recording, further vindication of NIN's continuing popularity and influence. -Genevieve Williams.
