Review That's Entertainment:"Why don't they make them like that anymore?" is a constant cry from those who grew up on the great movie-musicals of the 1940s and 1950s turned out by the Arthur Freed unit at MGM. Changing fashion and money are the two short answers. But it was to tap in on the desire of audiences to see film musicals and at the same time introduce those of Hollywood's golden era to a new audience that, in 1974, MGM issued a feature compilation of excerpts from more than 70. They called it That's Entertainment, and it was a runaway success, spawning two sequels. This disc is a single album anthology of 16 highlights from that film, featuring such stars as Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, June Allyson, Betty Hutton and Howard Keel. Astaire and others perform the album's title song; Garland goes "Over the Rainbow" and sings "The Trolley Song" (from Meet Me in St Louis); William Warfield sings "Ol' Man River"; Hutton and Keel agree "There's No Business Like Showbusiness"; and, of course, Gene Kelly is "Singin' in the Rain". This is a joyous compilation. It doesn't matter how many times you hear these performances, they never pall. -Richard Fawkes.

Review Bloodshot Eyes: The Best of Wynonie Harris / Wynonie Harris:Shouter Wynonie Harris did more than provide a link between small-combo R&B and the rock & roll of the '50s: the best of the jump-blues sides contained here rival Little Richard's greatest singles for sheer honking-sax raucousness. Harris's image-that of a suave wise guy with one eye on the skirts and the other on the bottle-helped define the music in an age when it was still largely targeted at adult audiences. The combination of spirited lyrics with driving performances by high-caliber jazzers-Ellington trumpet staple Cat Anderson, pianist Milt Buckner, and the great guitarist Mickey Baker are among the personnel-also served as a major influence on the '90s swing-revival bands. But the true proof of Harris's timelessness is the indefatigable energy that still blares (literally) from these sides.
