Review You Knock Me Out / Sax Gordon:"Sax" Gordon Beadle is the "house honker" (tenor saxophonist) for the Rounder/Bullseye label group, appearing on albums by Charles Brown, Champion Jack Dupree and Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson. The Detroit-born, Boston-based over-blower followed up his solo debut, "Have Horn Will Travel", by heading up a big, brash R&B combo, produced by its guitarist Duke Robillard. Think King Curtis, or indeed any other Texas tenor tornado, mixing screamed highs and chesty rumbles, tipping in the occasional shouted vocal (Gordon's favourite posture is right down on the floor, squealing and barking, legs skyward). Gordon penned the bulk of the tunes and Robillard successfully captured the genuine essence of an archetypal beatnik dive vibe. Any 1960s go-go stripper den would have made a happy home for Gordon's horn, as slurred as that imaginary joint's clientele, inching on their nail-dragging way, to the strains of his aptly titled closer, "Crawling Home". -Martin Longley.
