Review The Men From Uncle / The Ray Gelato Giants:Slick-suited singer and tenor saxophonist Ray Gelato is no swing bandwagon-jumper. He simply took timely advantage of the late-1990's zoot-suited euphoria, doing much the same jive thing with the Giants that he had going way back in the early 80s with the Chevalier Brothers. Many of the numbers on this album will already be familiar to those who have witnessed his vibrantly nostalgic live shows. Ray's chief muse is still Louis Prima, putting suitable bounce into the old Italian-American entertainer's "Josephine Please No Lean On The Bell" and "Angelina/Zooma Zooma", mixing simple fun with flashy chops. Gelato also spreads the Italian accent thickly for "Tu Vuo' Fa L'Americano", the tune first made famous by Sophia Loren in 1960, and more recently by the Levi's Dockers ads. Unusually, the Giants cover Donald Fagen's 80s pop tune "Walk Between The Raindrops", thankfully sending it back to the 40s, while Gelato himself pens a few updated swingers, letting his own tenor solo dominate "Givin' Up Givin' Up", a tune dedicated to the joys of uninhibited social excess. -Martin Longley.
