Review Songs for Swingin' Lovers / Frank Sinatra:Sinatra already had one youthful career behind him by the time he made Songs for Swingin' Lovers!. His were no longer the lustrous pipes of the kid crooner from Hoboken-the voice that made bobbysoxers swoon-but from the first notes of the opening track ("You Make Me Feel So Young"), he seems to have discovered a musical fountain of youth that fully justifies the exclamation point in the album title. There is a buoyant new spring in his step, accented by Nelson Riddle's lighter-than-air arrangements, that makes the Columbia records of Sinatra's younger days sound stiff and stodgy in comparison. Even chestnuts like "Old Devil Moon", "Pennies from Heaven", "Makin' Whoopee" and "Anything Goes" are rejuvenated by his vibrant touch. Put this alongside his previous Capitol album, In the Wee Small Hours, and you have the definitive statements by both sides of Sinatra's mature musical personality: the lonely "saloon singer" and the swaggering, sophisticated swinger. Sinatra's carefree confidence achieves its supreme expression in "I've Got You Under My Skin" a performance that builds steadily to an ecstatic climax. Review Call Off the Search / Katie Melua:No doubt 18-year-old Katie Melua has got used to being tagged "the next Norah Jones". After all, the similarities between her debut, Call Off the Search, and Jones's own five-Grammy-winning Come Away with Me more than support the comparison. Both feature precociously graceful and accomplished singers swirling through a haze of sweetly sensual sways-warm, slurred and gloriously lazy-and both certainly belong in the same stress-relieving rack in the easy-listening section. Yet to view Melua as a soundalike is to miss the strength and allure of her own distinctive character. Hers is intimate contemplation spiced with the jazzy drama of an off-Broadway musical. From the flamboyant inflections of her voice and the drowsy orchestra backing "The Closest Thing to Crazy" and "Learnin' the Blues", to the honky-tonk seduction of "My Aphrodisiac Is You", there's a street-smart attitude to her tender swoon that means the image of a dimly lit basement is never far away. Review Not Too Late / Norah Jones:Though pundits predicted a change of direction for the third Norah Jones album, fans of earlier works will be pleased to learn that Not Too Late maintains the chanteuse's subtle mantra of tasteful, insouciant songs tinged with jazz, folk, country and blues. The album differs in that the majority of tracks this time around were written by Norah herself (and long-term collaborator Lee Alexander); that said, musical support comes from her regular coterie (guitarist Jesse Harris, drummer Andy Borger and singer Daru Oda amongst others), as well as esteemed guests such as Kronos Quartet cellist Jeff Ziegler, Larry Goldings and singer-songwriter M Ward. Patient, simple ballads, calm jazz/folk chords and quiet instrumental embellishments are still what Norah does best and there are plenty here, enhanced of course by her timeless, honeyed vocals. With the notable exception of the idiosyncratic, politically-charged waltz "Sinkin' Soon" (featuring vocals from M. Ward), Not Too Late lopes along with typical restraint and candour, making for another collection of soothing, weightless tunes. -Paul Sullivan.

While not as scat-oriented as her small group outings, these Porter sets offer her most realized pop performances. Also, the gold remastering does a fine job of bringing out the nuances in the arrangements, making this a treasure for the serious collector and the casual listener alike. Review Capitol Collectors Series: Louis Prima / Louis Prima:Band leader and lounge kingpin Louis Prima will be best be known for the classic, "Just a Gigolo", immortalised by David Lee Roth for a whole new generation of swingers. But Prima's output went much further: in his day he recorded for Capitol, acted in a film or two, even owned a golf course. Prima's genius is infectious: lounge, swing, and Dixieland all fuse together into medleys that are fun, dance-worthy, and upbeat. Prima's duets with Keely Smith are the obvious highlights here: "That Ol' Black Magic", "Hey Boy! Hey Girl!", and "I've Got You Under My Skin" are essential Prima tracks. Sure, the cheese factor occasionally runs high, but it is a fun trip. -Jason Verlinde.

Review Get Happy / Clare Teal:Claire Teal has proved herself equally adept as pop singer and jazz diva. On her eighth album, Get Happy, she mixes up a bit of everything: pop and jazz standards along with some of her own material. As the title suggests, it's a largely upbeat album, unsurprising for a singer that exudes warmth and cheer much more naturally than melancholy or wistfulness. The chirpy swing of the title track is matches by at least half a dozen others-the waltzy "Get It On Sam", the gutsy versions of Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek" and Van Morrison's "Moondance" among them. Slower songs balance the album out, though these are far from lachrymose ballads. Neither the intimate, Latin-esque opener "All for Love", nor the former Roy Orbison hit "Love Hurts" or the vaguely sultry version of Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" sound very heartbroken-just technically perfect and dreamy to listen to. If there's any criticism of Get Happy, it's that Teal and her band don't bother taking any risks. But then you weren't really expecting them to, were you? -Danny McKenna.

Review Night Train / Oscar Peterson Trio:This 1962 recording represents Oscar Peterson at his most commercially accommodating, yet his trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen never fails to swing. The program includes such familiar melodies as the title track (which began life as Duke Ellington's "Happy Go Lucky Local"), "Georgia on My Mind", and "The Honey Dripper". With the notable exception of the gospel-like original "Hymn to Freedom", most of the tracks clock in at around three minutes. This reissue contains several alternate takes that were wisely left off the original LP, including such unlikely jazz vehicles as "Volare" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy". -Rick Mitchell.
