Review Big Band Bossa Nova / Quincy Jones:Even when he was a full-time jazz cat, Quincy Jones always had an ear for the pop aesthetic. This 1962 record does contain a good bit of, how you say, queijo in its unsubtle arrangements, but it is for the most part an accessible, entertaining, and bubbly affair. And with musicians of the calibre of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Paul Gonsalves, Clark Terry, Jim Hall (who can't help but be tasteful), and Phil Woods all contributing ideas, a baseline quality is assured. Most significantly, Jones goes beyond the expected Jobim and Bonfa cuts to fit Lerner & Loewe and even Mingus into bossa nova's bright clothes. -Marc Greilsamer.

Review Beyond The Missouri Sky / Charlie Haden:This subtle, sublime collaboration finds bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist Pat Metheny crafting bejewelled chamber duets that transcend genre. With their shared Missouri lineage as a thematic touchstone, Haden and Metheny forge a lyrical, mostly acoustic style at once intimate and expansive. Both pare their playing to a Zen-like economy, focusing on a purity of tone, clarity of harmony, and counterpoint to achieve a tender lyricism. Metheny's acoustic steel-string and classical guitars predominate, but he also applies discreet overdubs (including some delicate synthesizer and keyboard textures) to sculpt orchestral detail. Haden, as always, is both a generous foil and a deft melodist on his own, moving easily into his instrument's upper register as he twines through Metheny's lines. The set's emotional coherence is particularly satisfying in light of the material, which spans Ennio Morricone ("Cinema Paradiso"), Henry Mancini ("Two for the Road"), Jim Webb ("The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"), and Roy Acuff ("The Precious Jewel") as well as affecting originals by both leaders. And giving the project a sense of closure, while commenting obliquely on the generational dialogue it represents, is the luminous "Spiritual" (composed by Haden's son, Josh), an instrumental prayer that exemplifies the balance of concision and deep emotion at the heart of this exquisite triumph. -Sam Sutherland.

Review Buena Vista Social Club Presents Manuel Guajiro Mirabal / Manuel 'Guajiro' Mirabal:Like their peers the Funk Brothers, the ongoing, criminally unheard legacy of the Buena Vista Social Club's various legends continues to impress, and the emergence of 71 year-old Manuel Mirabal (a trumpeter of some repute in Cuban circles), for his spellbinding debut album, comes as no surprise. Those familiar with the premise of the Cuban grooves that were rediscovered through the original Buena Vista Social Club album and it's subsequent spin-off solo works will agree that the sound, feel and playing here ranks up with the greatest moments of this wonderful genre. Recorded as a tribute to Arsenio Rodriguez, a pioneer of Cuban music and modern salsa, even those unfamiliar will find much to love in this collection, not just in the fiery, masterful trumpet playing of El Guajiro, but also in the various guest vocalists (even newcomers and er, Gorillaz fans should recognize the none-more soulful vocals of Ibrahim Ferrer on "Deuda". Similarly, the backing musicians sound like the kind of band that are totally in simpatico with each other and work well to produce the finest grooves. Review The Magic Of (E) / Nana Mouskouri:You wouldn't know it to look at the track listing of this 1988 compilation, but there are more strings to Nana Mouskouri's bow than she seems content to use. Over four decades into her career, that distinctive voice-raised initially on a love of jazz and gospel-remains intact. However, this merely accentuates the Greek chanteuse's needless reliance on drippy ballads such as "The Power Of Love", "Love Me Tender" and "Amazing Grace". That it didn't have to be that way is well illustrated on the album's best track "Never On Sunday". Written by Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis for the eponymous film, the song's gently insistent refrain instantly affords Mouskouri's soprano a setting it seems more comfortable in. This shouldn't be surprising. Most of her early work was written by Hadjidakis with Mouskouri in mind, and although this album's opener "Only Love" briefly echoes the searching melancholia of those recordings, Mouskouri seems to yearn a little of her earlier direction. -Peter Paphides.
