Review Clare Teal / Don't Talk Publisher: Sony Jazz
Release date: 2004-10-18
RRP: £16.99
Price: £3.73

Review Don't Talk / Clare Teal:

Don't Talk, named after the Beach Boys' song, is Clare Teal's fourth album, her first with this label, and will come as no disappointment to her growing legion of fans. Combining a mixture of old standards and her own material, the album is a great platform for the Yorkshire woman's talent. Ranging from the big-band sound of "Messin' with Fire", with echoes of Peggy Lee in Teal's vocals, to the delightfully hypnotic samba rhythm and striking guitar solo on "So in Love", Don't Talk is an extremely polished production. Teal puts her own distinctive stamp on covers that include favourites from Duke Ellington and Dusty Springfield. The only disappointment on the album is her version of Etta James' classic, "I Just Want to Make Love to You", but big-band fans may enjoy it. She doesn't shirk from embracing a wide range of styles, including funky soul, Latin rhythms, heartfelt ballads and a '50s sounding "The Music Goes Round and Round", which sounds a lot like the Andrews Sisters in their prime. Teal is riding the new jazz wave that carries Norah Jones and Katie Melua, but this album has a depth and maturity that sets her apart from the crowd. -Amy Anderson.

Review Diana Krall / The Girl In The Other Room Publisher: Universal Classics
Release date: 2004-04-12
Run time: 60 min.
RRP: £16.99
Price: £2.26

Review The Girl In The Other Room / Diana Krall:

In The Girl in the Other Room, singer and pianist Diana Krall changes direction by interpreting modern standards by Tom Waits, Mose Allison and Joni Mitchell, as well as compositions by her and her new husband, Elvis Costello. Krall's jazz piano credentials come through loud and clear on her Count Basie-styled version of Bonnie Raitt's "Love Me Like a Man", but it's the collaborations with her spouse that reveal untapped emotional nuances in her velvet voice; many are reminiscent of Bill Evans's moody, impressionistic pieces. The title track, as well as "Narrow Daylight", "Abandoned Masquerade", and "I'm Coming Through" deals with love and loss. "Departure Bay", a picturesque ode to her hometown of Nanaimo, BC, proves that this is the start of something big, and that two heads-and hearts-are better than one. -Eugene Holley, Jr, Amazon. com.

Review Jeff Beck / Who Else Publisher: Epic
Release date: 2001-01-01
RRP: £6.99
Price: £3.47

Review Who Else / Jeff Beck:

If the album title seems self-assured, it's only truth in labelling. For his last album of the millennium, rock's greatest guitarist teams with an old compatriot (keyboardist Tony Hymas, a staple since 1980's There and Back who co-produces here with Beck) and one of his musical godchildren (Jennifer Battin, long-time tour guitarist for Michael Jackson). The result is a rough musical travelogue of the 80s and 90s that occasionally turns down a dead end. The synth-sequenced backdrops and terse phrasings of "Psycho-Sam", "Blast from the East", and "THX138" recall the fusion reactions on Wired and There and Back (and pose a seemingly heretical notion: did Beck invent techno?). "Space for the Papa" recalls the no-frills structure of Guitar Shop. "Angel (Footsteps)" showcases Beck's unique tone and phrasing, evoking Santo and Johnny swinging on a star, while "Another Place" offers up elegant classicism. "Hip-Notica" proves there's still funk in Beck's blood, even if "Declan" gets mired in New Age overkill. But Beck's shortcomings have traditionally come in framing his incendiary prowess and emotional directness. As a high-profile collaborator once put it, "You fast-forward through that stuff to get to the solos. " In that department, Who Else! delivers. [+]
The live, unadorned "Brush with the Blues" lets him elevate masterfully subtle riffing into a firestorm of a solo. "Even Odds" (a reunion with Jan Hammer) and "Space" show what a mockery the musician can make of otherwise useful terms such as noise and tonality. If Who Else! occasionally stumbles, it's good to remember what a critic once said of the Marx Brothers: "They never made a film as good as they really were. " Beck has made great albums, but few to match his genius as a musician. -Jerry McCulley.

Review Frank Sinatra / Eee-O 11: The Best Of The Rat Pack Publisher: Capitol
Release date: 2001-11-26
RRP: £13.99
Price: £4.75

Review Eee-O 11: The Best Of The Rat Pack / Frank Sinatra:

Timed to coincide with the release of the 2001 remake of the Sinatra, Martin and Davis anti-classic Ocean's 11, Eee-O 11 serves less as a best-of than an introduction to the high-living nightclub ethos the Rat Pack embodied. Along with some true knockouts, mostly from Frank's catalogue, the collection includes some impossible corn (a "When You're Smiling" that seems to be putting Dino himself to sleep) along with a couple of straitjacketed studio takes on the Pack's onstage antics (both Sammy duets). Handily, it culls one of the original movie's few high points-the rousing Davis blues that provides this disc's title-for a closer. Those drawn in by the newer film will find this a welcome package, as will swingin' initiates looking for a road-trip CD soundtrack. -Rickey Wright.
