Review In a Silent Way [VINYL] / Miles Davis:Miles Davis's famous mid-1960s quintet, featuring saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Herbie Hancock, was intact until just a few weeks before his new, electric ensemble recorded In a Silent Way. Legendary as a kind of line in the sand challenging jazz fans during the ascendance of electric, psychedelic rock, In a Silent Way hinted at the repetitive polyrhythms Davis would employ throughout the early 1970s. It also partook generously of electric piano and bass and rekindled the tonal palette that Davis had explored famously with Kind of Blue. But In a Silent Way remains a clearly electric jazz record, part ambient colour exploration, part rock-inflected energy and vibe, and part outright maverick creativity. Review G. Love & Special Sauce / G. Love:Despite emerging in the same year that Beck released his Mellow Gold debut, G Love is still a relative unknown in the UK. It's a shame, because the Philadephian's take on slacker hip-hop deserves a wider audience, not just for the deep soul, funk and even country grooves that he entices the listener to embrace, but for the inventiveness of his format. Steeped in blues licks, the album was recorded practically live with just an acoustic trio of upright bass, piano and drums accompanying G Love's guitar. Admittedly the vocals, which veer too much toward a lounge singer trying to do a lazy rap, are an acquired taste, but several years on, this album sounds fresh and at the end of the day all it really lacked was a killer track like "Loser". -Tim Perry With Beck's unexpected commercial breakthrough, everyone's suddenly interested in a new kind of music best described as "slacker-rap. " Although it uses the sing-song cadences of hip-hop, it's the polar opposite of gangsta rap; in both its laid-back delivery and self-deprecating lyrics, slacker-rap acknowledges vulnerability and failure. It was done first and best by Washington's Basehead, but it gets an invigorating twist on "G. Love and Special Sauce," the eponymous debut album from this Philadelphia trio. G. Love not only looks like Michael Stipe, but he has the same mealy-mouthed vocal delivery. [+]If Stipe ever decided to record his first rap album with an unplugged blues trio, it'd probably sound a lot like "G. Love and Special Sauce. " Recorded live with no drum machines, samples or overdubs, the album creates a fresh, distinctive sound with its odd blend of lazy rapping and funky acoustic blues. Unfortunately, G. Love's absurdist observations on life aren't as funny as those by John S. Hall of King Missle, and the laid-back minimalism of the music wears thin after a while. Only "Baby's Got Sauce," which boasts a pop hook and a valentine to a domineering woman, holds up on repeated listens. -Geoffrey Himes.

No doubt 18-year-old Katie Melua has got used to being tagged "the next Norah Jones". After all, the similarities between her debut, Call Off the Search, and Jones's own five-Grammy-winning Come Away with Me more than support the comparison. Both feature precociously graceful and accomplished singers swirling through a haze of sweetly sensual sways-warm, slurred and gloriously lazy-and both certainly belong in the same stress-relieving rack in the easy-listening section. Review The Ultimate Collection / Louis Armstrong:There are many Louis Armstrong anthologies, and this one is certainly outstanding, with 24 tracks running over 77 minutes, spanning all but the very earliest years of Satchmo's career. The majority of the album covers Armstong's various bands over the years, the Orchestra, Dixieland Seven and All Stars, but also featuring tracks such as "Only You" (1955) with the Benny Carter Orchestra, and "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" (1950) with Ella Fitzgerald and the Sy Oliver Orchestra. As the cover says "The sound quality is excellent for its period on all tracks, but inevitably various throughout the album. All tracks have been newly digitally remastered for this compilation from original source material. " Thus "St. Louis Blues" from 1933 really swings, and "Pennies From Heaven" (1947) shines with authentic character despite a somewhat rough live recording. Well featured are trumpet-led tunes such as "Tiger Rag" (1947), as well as the later famous hits like "Mack The Knife" (1956) and "Moon River" (1964) dominated by that unmistakably rich voice. Most Armstrong anthologies include "What A Wonderful World", but this album also contains a fascinating alternative take from 1970. It's a difficult choice, but if you only have room for one Armstrong collection, this excellent release just might be it. -Gary S. [+]Dalkin.
