Review As Time Goes By / Bryan Ferry:No stranger to covers, Bryan Ferry has often opted for classics from other times and places. As Time Goes By focuses on music largely from the 1930s and 40s and conjures that era's aura of fine cigars, satin gowns and gentlemanly romance. The opening title track summons images of Bogie and Ingrid and is one of the finest moments in the collection. The swanky versions of Nina Simone's signature "Love Me or Leave Me" and "I'm in the Mood for Love" (which has a faint Martin Denny overtone) are perfectly suited to Ferry's low-key vocals (he's no real crooner, let's face it). His talented band swings with fervour, especially on the upbeat tunes "The Way You Look Tonight", "Lover Come Back to Me" and "Just One of Those Things". There are a number of intimate, romantic moments, but the highlight is Ferry's take on "Falling in Love Again", first made famous way back when with devastating sadness by Marlene Dietrich. Review Philtre / Nitin Sawhney:Philtre, the latest album from Nitin Sawhney, is certainly cause for celebration. More rounded and palatable than his previous efforts, this doesn't quite surpass the benchmark set by his celebrated Beyond Skin album, though in its own right it's a remarkably accomplished piece of work. Setting the tone with the downbeat, moody "Everything", the album is a treat that twists and turns at every opportunity, gathering up lazy, loping Beck-style hip-hop at "Dead Man" (complete with attractive slide guitar), cinematic strings, polite drum n bass ("Journey"), flamenco, turntablism and whatever else it can, throwing it all into the melting pot. After establishing the various styles, the second half of the album picks up and contains the most satisfying moments, like the R&B flavour of "Throw" and funk-lite of "Flipside". The freshness of the album, however is ensured by the plethora of guest vocalists, who are utilized effectively, keeping interest where a single voice would drag. All the vocalists are salutary, but the most effective use is with the two "Noches En Vela" interludes provided by Mexican fusion collective Ojos de Brujo which alleviate the album just when it needs it. A fascinating, highly recommended, sonic journey all round. -Thom Allott.

Review The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady / Charles Mingus:This 1963 recording occupies a special place in Mingus's work, his most brilliantly realized extended composition. The six-part suite is a broad canvas for the bassist's tumultuous passions, ranging from islands of serenity for solo guitar and piano to waves of contrapuntal conflict and accelerating rhythms that pull the listener into the musical psychodrama. It seems to mingle and transform both the heights and clichés of jazz orchestration, from Mingus's master, Duke Ellington, to film noir soundtracks. The result is a masterpiece of sounds and textures, from the astonishing vocal effects of the plunger-muted trumpets and trombone (seeming to speak messages just beyond the range of understanding) to the soaring romantic alto of Charlie Mariano. Boiling beneath it all are the teeming, congested rhythms of Mingus and drummer Dannie Richmond and the deep morass of tuba and baritone saxophone. This is one of the greatest works in jazz composition, and it's remarkable that Mingus dredged this much emotional power from a group of just 11 musicians. -Stuart Broomer.
