Review Slowhand / Eric Clapton:Clapton had already established himself as a guitar legend by the time he released Slowhand. His heroin habit long behind him, Clapton's songwriting mastery was fully evident on the album, particularly in the stunning ballad "Wonderful Tonight". It fully actualised all of the potential hinted at in his earlier "Promises", and Clapton trusted himself enough to slow things down. Some of his most expressive guitar work can be found throughout this album, not just within "Wonderful". Ironically enough, Slowhand is probably best known for the hit "Cocaine"-built upon a simple repeated riff, the song had Clapton's trademark smooth voice with its wear around the edges, and yet another stellar guitar solo. Flashy runs and licks were never the most integral part of Clapton's catalogue, his blues background being the primary source for his sound. Slowhand, with its phrasings, both guitar and vocal, established Clapton as the possessor of one of the most extensive vocabularies in rock. -Steve Gdula.

Review Down on the Bayou / Chris Barber:To guest with Chris Barber, the Crescent City's own Dr. John ended up in the Village Recorders studio in Dagenham. At least the veteran UK trombonist can lay claim to many prior New Orleans visits, stretching right back to his first gigging trip in 1959, when the city was largely the same as it had been in the 1930s. The Doc (real name Mac Rebennack) introduces the album with one of his old style raps, then sings on "They Took My Money", "Corrinne Across The Sea" and "Skippin' & Jumpin'", applying his characteristically nonchalant drawl, sticking around to contribute some extra piano parts. Nearly half of the tracks were recorded at the end of 1985, with Roger Hill on guitar rather than John Slaughter. These are shuffled together with the other sessions, all concentrating on the song side of the Barber band repertoire, taking the New Orleans drag-footing slow blues from funeral street marches down to sweaty basement dens. -Martin Longley.

Review Thanks For Bringing Love Around Again / Ray Charles:Ray Charles still has a marvellous voice, equal parts sweat and moonbeams. Nonetheless, it seems the legendary genius of soul didn't apply all his brainpower to Thanks For Bringing Love Around Again. It may, in part, be a matter of taste. The sampled horns and strings in tunes like "Can You Love Me Like That" and "How Did You Feel the Morning After" pale next to the terrific arrangements for organic instruments that have long been a cornerstone of his reputation. And too many of these numbers, from the blithe "I Love You More Than I Ever Have" to the ballad "Ensemble," depend so much on female supporting vocalists that Charles sometimes seems like a guest on his own album. Worse, his new songs are often unrealised-mere fragmentary notions of lyrics over grooves. For much of this CD he has adopted the programmed beats and clichéd electronic keyboard lines that are common to the Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys' world of contemporary pop. It's one thing for a classic artist to attempt to reinvent himself, another to dilute his art for the charts, which he hardly has a prayer of reaching, given the state of today's music biz and its negative attitude toward the pioneers of virtually any longstanding musical style. That said, not everything here is disappointing. The title ballad uses Charles' relaxed vocal delivery to full advantage, and the funkier "New Orleans" shows off his barroom piano chops. [+]
The other winners are the monologue-jam "Mr Creole," a checklist of New Orleans' human virtues, and "Mother," an ode to maternal love that brings Charles' pure soul singing to the fore. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review Steppin' on the Blues / Lonnie Johnson:Not only did Johnson pioneer single-string, blues-guitar improvisation, he still ranks as one of its greatest practitioners. His playing was remarkably fluent, sophisticated, and melodic, yet he never sacrificed emotion or bite. He was the first bluesman to make his mark as a virtuoso instrumentalist, despite his formidable vocals. These 19 early performances (1925-1932) include low-down blues, buoyant ragtime, and catchy hokum, plus examples of sheer instrumental wizardry. Victoria Spivey joins Johnson for the risque vocal duet "Toothache Blues" and Texas Alexander sings lead on a pair of songs, but the instrumentals inevitably remain the highlights. His two guitar duets with jazz great Eddie Lang plus his solo workout on "Playing With the Strings" are astonishing displays of technique. -Marc Greilsamer.
