Review The Very Best of Jimmy Reed / Jimmy Reed:This two-CD set contains 20 tracks per disc, covering Reed's most productive period. Like Elmore James, this Mississippi bluesman has received an undue share of accusations over the apparent primitive repetitions of his style. But again, like Elmore, he has been covered and idolised by his rock descendants, particularly the Rolling Stones. Reed got his first electric guitar at the start of the 1950s, then started gigging around the Chicago clubs, signing to VeeJay Records in 1953. His laconic, laid-back grind was possessed of a completely unique atmospheric quality, his twanging, slow-riffing guitar figures usually bolstered by childhood sidekick Eddie Taylor's more detailed licks. Most of Reed's own striking solos came straight from his neck-rack-suspended harmonica, trilling out piercing high notes, smeared and held, standing out sharply from each tune's sleepy rumble. The Reed vocal manner was often slurred, not as a deliberate style, but frequently because he'd imbibed copious amounts of whiskey, ultimately a contributory factor towards his early demise. His massive contribution to the blues repertoire includes "Baby, What You Want Me To Do", "Hush-Hush", "You Don't Have To Go", "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby", "Shame, Shame, Shame" and "Bright Lights, Big City", all of which are included here. -Martin Longley.

Review Anthology [Us Import] / Ray Charles:Even for a relatively brief (20-song) overview of Ray Charles's '60s output during the peak of his recording stardom at ABC-Paramount, Anthology covers a hell of a lot of styles. It couldn't be any other way, not when examining the period in which he hit the charts with transformed versions of half-forgotten standards ("Georgia on My Mind"), hip jazz instrumental takes on Clovers tunes ("One Mint Julep"), rocking uptempo R&B ("Hit the Road Jack") and mournful proto-countrypolitan ("I Can't Stop Loving You"). If any of those four titles means a thing to you, this primer on America's greatest singer is probably a disc you should own. -Rickey Wright.
