Review Live at the Regal / Bb King:

Heralded as one of the greatest live blues albums ever recorded, this set catches the singer-guitarist as his star was in ascent: in 1964 playing Chicago's answer to Harlem's Apollo Theatre-the Regal. King's performance is visceral: he sings so hard that gravel flies even in his clearest high notes. And his trademark single-note guitar lines are sharp and steely, matching his voice with trembling vigour. He offers early hits like "How Blue Can You Get", "Worry, Worry" and "You Upset Me Baby" to what's essentially his adopted hometown crowd (by his own account, King had already played the theatre hundreds of times). They give him a hero's welcome; in fact, the audience's screaming enthusiasm is distracting. But rarely has a love-fest of this magnitude between a performer and fans been documented. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review A Meeting By the River / Ry Cooder:

Ry Cooder has long had an interest in other people's music, from the blues and gospel of black America through classic jazz and the music of Cuba. Even by this standard, his meeting with Mohan Vishwa Bhatt is certainly a departure. He is neither a serious student of Indian music nor in any way a master of its intricacies. Yet on his improvised session (this album was recorded without rehearsal in one evening), he and Bhatt truly collided musically and created moments worthy of the world-music Grammy they received for it. Bhatt is an iconoclastic character himself. He plays a modified box he calls the mohan vina that is a hybrid of a classical Indian instrument and slide guitar. He is long trained in the arduous classical style, yet his work has always demanded a lot of freedom. His duets here with Cooder are completely unique, liberating both artists from the usual constraints and creating a new musical style that is unlikely to be repeated or imitated. -Louis Gibson.

Review Get Me Some / Jeff Healey:

It can be somewhat disconcerting to witness Jeff Healey encouraging his guitar to cry because, quite frankly, he plays it all wrong. Rather than dangling it from his shoulder and jabbing it from his crotch in the accepted phallic fashion, he rests it across his lap and taps out blues figures to make your heart bleed. While reasonably akin to witnessing a negligent artiste endeavouring to blow into a cello, you have to admit that the resultant sonic confection is rarely short of awe-inspiring. Which is nice. Get Me Some finds the Toronto-born guitarist, blind since developing eye cancer at the age of one, operating at the very peak of his form. Fret pyrotechnics occasionally flutter into the peerless arena of Stevie Ray Vaughan's finest fluidity, while the material perpetually sparkles with vibrant crescendos. From the blazing "Which One" to the poignant "Rachel's Song", Get Me Some is pure genius. -Ian Fortnam.

Review I Feel So Good: the Essential Recordings of 'big' Bill Broonzy / Big' Bill Broonzy:

When these atmospheric songs were recorded between 1932 and 1942, the unsophisticated Broonzy couldn't have dreamed of the fame he was to find in Europe for the six years until his death in 1958. But these tracks are from the early part of his career and were made for mainly black American audiences. They are full of charm and, taken within the context of the music, skilful and appealing instrumental solos. There was a clarity in Broonzy's diction and a powerful swing to his guitar playing that has enabled these tracks to have a life of their own almost 60 years after they were made. This is the real Broonzy-a hard diamond in contrast with the man who, during the 1950s, realised that his European audiences wanted him to be a simple farm hand singing of cotton and molasses. He played up to the image even though he had been an urban factory worker and a professional entertainer for 30 years by then. So this is the essence of Broonzy, and what an enjoyable experience it is! Most of the great classic songs associated with him are here in their original versions, "Key To The Highway", "When I Been Drinking" and "Night Time Is The Right Time" amongst them. -Steve Voce.

Review Nick of Time / Bonnie Raitt:

Nick of Time is the watershed moment in Bonnie Raitt's recording career, the sound of a survivor finding new focus and purpose in her art after nearly 20 years of generally superb, commercially underachieving recordings. An exquisite interpretive singer and formidable guitarist who'd long ago honed her bluesy chops, Raitt raised the stakes by mixing the usual gourmet spread of smart cover choices with her own candid songs-and she knocked one over the fence with the opening track, the album's title song and a moving confession of a boomer's anxieties about age, death, and the impermanence of love. "Nick of Time" catapulted a feisty rock tomboy into a new station that made her as admired by female fans as the stage door johnnies who'd long loved her rock technique, and she covered the bet with other outside songs from John Hiatt ("Thing Called Love"), Bonnie Hayes ("Love Letter", "Have a Heart"), and Jerry L. Williams ("Real Man") that resonated with her persona as a tough, smart, but ultimately tender woman. -Sam Sutherland.
