Review In the Beginning / Stevie Ray Vaughan:

This visceral live recording from April 1, 1980, was broadcast on radio from the Steamboat 1874 club in Stevie Ray Vaughan's adopted hometown, Austin, Texas. It circulated among collectors and his manager used some of the tape as a demo before Vaughan was signed to Epic Records by John Hammond. Young Stevie Ray's performance bristles with uncorked energy: Vaughan is caught improvising on raw slide guitar, growling through Otis Rush's "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)" and pushing his fretboard speed and vocal limits on Guitar Slim's "They Call Me Guitar Hurricane. " Also offered are unpolished versions of tunes that became fan favourites: "Tin Pan Alley", "Love Struck Baby" and "Tell Me. " -Ted Drozdowski.

Review Remembering Big Bill Broonzy: the Greatest Minstrel of the Authentic Blues / Big' Bill Broonzy:

Long before hip-hop got into bed with rock and Jazz flirted with soul, the blues entertained not only cross-country relations with jazz and the worksong, but also cross-continental rhythms with European folk and immigrant culture. This CD personifies this, painting Broonzy as a kind of reactionary of this era, flexing blatant tongue in cheek protest on "Get Back" (". Whites alright, Browns stick around, Blacks get back!"), whilst taking on differing influences-such as the vigorous folk strut of "John Henry" and the big band assisted "Walkin' Down A Lonesome Road". Vocally, Broonzy has the capacity to bark and growl in blues tradition, but "Willie May" is probably the best display of his signature sound. Robbed of his ability at 58 through cancer, Broonzy left a legacy to inspire millions, and these 11 tracks serve as a fine introduction to both beginners and enthusiast alike. -Found Sounds.

Review Couldn't Stand the Weather / Stevie Ray Vaughan:

This second album, Couldn't Stand the Weather is one of the great Texan guitarist's most representative (and best), winning out on variety in terms of its chosen material, track lengths and general feel. The Double Trouble rhythm team had been with Vaughan since 1978, this longest-running version featuring bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton, keeping it tight behind Stevie Ray's dynamo fronting. Vaughan tears straight into "Scuttle Buttin", a terse instrumental showcase, guitar spitting clusters of hot buckshot. Then he cuts back for the title track, suddenly toying with the spaces between each groove. Vaughan's funky chopping summons the memory of Hendrix, his chief influence, but not as much as the majestic version of "Voodoo Chile" which follows immediately: the next best thing you're going to get apart from Jimi himself. Vaughan wisely chooses to cover Guitar Slim's classic "The Things (That) I Used To Do", with brother Jimmie guesting on second guitar. Then, "Roughest Place In Town" reveals that slinky sensitivity is Stevie Ray's province too, vocals breathily sighing as he picks out, high-stringed pointillist miniatures. -Martin Longley.

Review Texas Flood / Stevie Ray Vaughan:

This legendary 1983 debut by the fallen torchbearer of the 1980s-90s blues revival sounds even more dramatic in its remixed and expanded edition. Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar and vocals are a bit brighter and more present on this 14-track album. Texas Flood captures Vaughan as rockin' blues purist, paying tribute in his inspired six-string diction to his influences Larry Davis (who wrote the title track), Buddy Guy, Albert King, and Jimi Hendrix. His own contemplative "Lenny", a tribute to his wife at the time, also suggests a jazz-fuelled complexity that would infuse his later work. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review Continental Drif [Us Import] / Charlie Musselwhite:

Charlie Musselwhite's is the voice of experience. One can hear it on every note of Continental Drifter, where the relaxed feel of the experienced bluesman is evident in the main harmonica riff of "Little Star" and the smooth, Delta-style guitar of "Blues Up the River. " Several of the songs have a strong Cuban-Brazilian feel, and Musselwhite is joined on several of these by friend Eliades Ochoa and his band, Cuarteto Patria. Musselwhite's primarily known as a harmonica player, and it's easy to hear why on this album; whether he's spicing up the Cuban-blues mix of "Sabroso" or soloing over the jumpy rhythm of "Can't Stay Away from You," he's always bang on the note. -Genevieve Williams.
