Review Blues Masters: The Very Best of Jimmy Reed / Jimmy Reed:

With his meteoric run of hits from early 1955 through late 1961, Chicago's Jimmy Reed reigned as the most popular bluesman of his day, rivaled only by fellow Mississippi transplant B. B. King. By the mid-'60s Reed was playing New York's Carnegie Hall and the Apollo Theater, and touring England as a star. Reed's sweet Delta-inflected singing complemented the cool walking bass shuffles of his cleverly crafted songs, the finest of which are to be found in this tasteful contribution to Rhino's commendable Blues Masters series. Included here are chart toppers like "You Don't Have to Go," "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby," "Baby What You Want Me to ," "Big Boss Man," and "Bright Lights Big City," all durable standards that influenced a generation of rockers from Bob Dylan to the Rolling Stones to Jimi Hendrix, and earned Reed his proper place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. -Alan Greenberg.

Review Tales From the Crypt / Various:

Another would-be Twilight Zone that proved short-lived, Tales from the Crypt did, however, coax some particularly fine contributions from leading lights in the Hollywood music industry and this collection has 11 of the best. They're sandwiched between Danny Elfman's Munsters-on-Speed "Main Title" and a highly amusing rap number performed by The Crypt Keeper himself ("The Crypt Jam"). Jan Hammer's style is quite recognisable in "Three's A Crowd" but the bouncing synths of "Cutting Cards" are like nothing else by James Horner. That's also true of "Reluctant Vampire" from Cliff Eidelman and "Ventriloquist's Dummy" from Miles Goodman. There was obviously nowhere near as much of a musical budget as Spielberg's Amazing Stories but that never affected the quality. -Paul Tonks.

Review The Birth Of Soul : The Complete Atlantic Rhythm & Blues Recordings, 1952-1959 / Ray Charles:

Though this is not the most recent Ray Charles box set collection, it may be the best. That's because it focuses on Ray's great growth in the 1950s, particularly his days with Atlantic Records. The set opens with Ray still in a Charles Brown, smooth-voice, mellow-piano mode, but in short order, he discovers his own identity. From the good time of "It Should Have Been Me" on disc one, though the orgiastic "What'd I Say, Parts 1 & 2" on disc three, the man they call "The Genius" rocks, rolls, raises the rafters, and sinks way down low with the blues. This box also features an excellent essay by the late music historian, Robert Palmer. -Robert Gordon.

Review The Road We're on / Sonny Landreth:

Sonny Landreth's 10-year career as a leader has always seemed tenuous, because he's a one-dimensional singer and only an adequate songwriter. But the 12 numbers on The Road We're On run deeper than his previous recordings. Like much of his catalogue, they straddle the worlds of blues, cajun, zydeco and New Orleans party music, but the blues dominates. And that gives the conflagrant Mississippi-born and Louisiana-raised slide guitarist plenty of fuel. So he burns liberally at every turn, from the acoustic resonator guitar that opens and closes the disc to the percolating funk of "Hell at Home" and the Allmans-like, riff-driven intensity of "Fallin' for You". "A World Away" is this album's tour de force, with Landreth summoning soul from the seldom-used soft side of his voice and slow, moaning guitar lines, whose steel-on-steel cries echo the resigned heartbreak of the lyrics. The album's sterling production puts Landreth's guitar front and centre, which reaffirms the instrumental mastery of this former John Hiatt and Clifton Chenier sideman. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review Atlantic Rhythm & Blues: 1947-1974 / Various:

Atlantic Records has ridden musical trends since the late '40s; these seven CDs chronicle the first 28 years of the label's work in black pop, during which artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding oversaw the creation and flowering of soul music. Also included are classic tracks by the Drifters, Wilson Pickett, Ruth Brown, the Coasters, Sam & Dave, and many others who walk through the dreams of R&B and rock & roll fans. -Rickey Wright.
