Review Eric Clapton - 461 Ocean Boulevard [DVD AUDIO] / Eric Clapton:Predictably, given the drug problems which preceded its release, Clapton's second solo album proper seems to come and go in an opium haze of its own making. Oddly though, it suits him. As the history of rock attests, if you're going to get into one hard drug then you may as well make it heroin. Whereas cocaine feeds the ego and destroys judgement, heroin sublimates it and allows the artist to regress into his music. Which pretty much describes where 461 Ocean Boulevard is at. Because tracks like "Steady Rollin' Man" and US chart topper "I Shot The Sheriff" sound like they have all the time in the world, they make light work of putting the listener in a similar frame of mind. Best of all though is "Let It Grow", for many the kind of tender, foetal balladry which finds Clapton at his most quintessential. Inevitably, he cleaned up his act and sporadically attained similar heights. But for sheer mood and sense of moment, 461 Ocean Boulevard remains his masterpiece. -Peter Paphides.

Review Soul to Soul / Stevie Ray Vaughan:Arguably the finest blues guitarist of his generation, Wisconsin-born Stevie Ray Vaughan initially learnt his chops on his brother-and Fabulous Thunderbirds' mainstay-Jimmie's hand-me-down guitars whilst glued to the works of Albert King and Lonnie Mack. After honing his skills in the late 70s with a variety of lacklustre combos, he was headhunted by David Bowie for 1983's Let's Dance tour, but left early to concentrate on his solo work. On this, his third album, Vaughan's virtuosity is both augmented and accentuated by Double Trouble, a backing band of rare competence, finally allowed to shine after having played a singularly supportive role to Stevie on earlier efforts. From the throbbing mid-tempo blues grooves of "Say What", through the barroom shuffle of "Look At Little Sister" to the head-spinning, flying-finger dexterity of "Empty Arms", Soul To Soul stands as a fitting epitaph to a true master of the blues. -Ian Fortnam.

Review King of the Blues / Freddie King:Chicago blues guitar firebrand Freddie King did his best and definitive recording for the Federal label in the early '60s, when he helped define the Windy City's hard-edged West Side sound. Sadly, none of that material is included on these two CDs. However, we do get to hear King take a rare turn on acoustic guitar (on Elmore James's "Dust My Broom" and Jimmy Rogers "Walking by Myself") and rip through his late-career signature "Going Down" as well as 38 other tracks. There's also a half-dozen unreleased cuts, including a version of his classic "Hide Away. " But too much of this stuff-tunes like John Fogerty's "Lodi," "Ain't No Sunshine," "Gimme Some Lovin'"-seems like a bad producer's notion of what King needed to record to reach a rock audience. Thankfully the strength of his vocals and gutsy guitar carry most of these performances. -Ted Drozdowski.
