Review Alive 2007 / Daft Punk:It's a rare breed of dance artist capable of putting on a live show that inspires not just motion and emotion in an audience, but genuine, flat-out awe. Alive 2007, however, is documentary evidence that Daft Punk-aka Parisian robo-men Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo-now join the ranks of Kraftwerk and Underworld in live dance music's upper echelons. Recoded at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in June 2007, it finds Daft Punk pull the bolts off their back catalogue and get busy with the circuitry, rewiring it into a rolling montage that's as deviously complex as it is flat-out crowd-pleasing. Affairs commence with the unmistakable one-note guitar fanfare of "Robot Rock", but halfway though, Daft Punk get busy with their onstage tech-mountain, splicing in snatches of the pounding "Oh Yeah" before dropping back to the riffs. Deeper in, tracks flow together, vocal hooks escape from their sockets and skitter off through the mix-and by the time of the epic climax, a triumphant cut-and-shut of "Superheroes", "Human After All", and "Rock `n' Roll", you've forgotten where the joins ever sat. For those who've yet to see him in action-over 19 hours or otherwise-this Back to Basics mix from the great man makes a pretty nifty substitute. Over two immaculately-mixed discs, Tenaglia moves through his whole repertoire, from deep, dubby West Coast house and piano-laden US garage to the tougher tribal and minimal progressive sounds he's most famous for. As you'd expect from a man known for his taste making abilities, the track listing reads like a who's who of contemporary, cutting-edge club culture, with recent classics nestling side by side with the freshest, upfront white labels. Some hardened Tenaglia-nuts may balk at the catch-all approach (the Brooklyn-born DJ is more famous for all-out tribal and prog sets than the "from deep to tough" journey here), but this is merely a consequence of the home listening nature of Back to Basics Presents. Either way, this is a fine mix by one of the world's favourite DJs. -Matt Anniss.

Review Ibiza Euphoria / Alex Gold:Hot on the heels of the first Euphoria compilation of Summer 2000, the commercial ambient workout that was Chilled Euphoria, came Ibiza Euphoria-the soundtrack to the night before the morning after-an energetic double CD mix of bronzed, athletic hard house and pneumatic dance floor trance. With Alex Gold (the boss of Balearic dance label Xtravaganza) and Privilege residents Agnelli & Nelson taking to the decks, the emphasis is on high BPM podium-storming numbers-see the likes of Mothers Pride's "Learning To Fly", Faithless girl Sister Bliss' "Sister Sister", and a worthy Paul Van Dyk-overhauled take on Tranceparents' "Child 2". This being an Ibizan compilation, it sometimes all gets a little bit too Robert Miles-esque for the serious trancer-there's a few too many cheesy sunrise-on-the-beach moments for comfort-and bafflingly, the some of the track choices are hardly diverse-two overhauled Frankie Goes To Hollywood tracks, and a worrying tendency towards trance wallpaper like Chicane or BT. Ibiza Euphoria offers an enjoyable, sturdy mix for the unfussy clubber, but if you're looking for a bit more diversity, try a Gatecrasher or Global Underground compilation. -Louis Pattison.
