Review Now Phats What I Small Music / Phats & Small:

At the vanguard of the disco-house movement which engulfed British clubs and hearts alike in 1999, Phats and Small made their name with productions that were unashamedly commercial and eminently danceable. It comes as no surprise then that the Brighton duo's debut album is resolutely upbeat throughout. Hip-swinging basslines and feel-good melodies are the name of the game here, with singer Big Ben lending his jubilant vocals to singles "Turn Around", "Tonite" and "Feel Good". Although they're never going to win any prizes for innovation (the string sample on "Music For Pushchairs" is brazenly pilfered from Armand Van Helden's "You Don't Know Me"), Phats and Small have wisely stick to what they do best and produced a disposable party album par excellence. -Ed Potton.

Review Future Sound of Chicago Volume 2 / Various Artists:

The second (or arguably third) wave of Chicago's house music came out of Cajmere's Cajual and Relief imprints in the early 1990s. Future Sound Of Chicago is the definitive mix of 15 of the labels' early (and most exciting) releases. The Chicago new skool are all here: Glenn Underground, Gemini, DJ Rush, Paul Johnson, Boo Williams. It's mixed a treat by DJ Sneak and the man Cajmere himself-a distinctive sound based on minimal hard (yet funky) beats and warped, abstract speech samples. Future Sound Of Chicago includes Cajmere's own finest recordings-'Horny', plus 'Flash' and 'Preacher Man' under his Green Velvet alias (two of the greatest house records ever recorded). The first is an abstract observation of the modelling industry; the latter samples the hysterical sermon about the immorality of the times and "playing house". Worth the price for these tracks alone. -Sarah Champion.

Review To All New Arrivals: Limited Edition / Faithless:

Faithless's fifth studio album, To All New Arrivals, is a tribute of sorts to the brand new babies that band-members Rollo and Sister Bliss recently (and separately) brought into the world. Lead single "Bombs", with its chugging, understated beat, social analysis and decidedly anti-war stance, makes for an impressive start. From there the album gets a little bogged down in the rose-tinted sentimentality of 'new parent' syndrome. "Spiders, Crocodiles and Kryptonite" has someone uttering childish inanities in a silly voice (its saved by an extended segment of the Cure's "Lullaby" - but only just); the uplifting "Music Matters" (with Cass Fox) is marred by mawkish lyrics; "I Hope" offers similarly trite messages of parental hope, and the title track plots sounds like a song for Children In Need. All this is doubtless well meant, but comes across as naïve, even vacuous in places. Fortunately the music fares better. Aside from the wishy-washy "Last This Day" (with Dido) and the nondescript "Nate's Tune," the robust "Hope & Glory", the wonderful "A Kind Of Peace" (with Cat Power), the catchy "The Man In You" and the bristling finale, "Emergency", show that Faithless are still capable of writing rousing club sounds. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Old Skool Euphoria: Mixed By Altern 8 / Altern 8:

The nostalgia industry grinds onward ever onward, but along the way, it throws up a few real gems. If the reported long-term effects of ecstasy are anything to go by, Old Skool Euphoria should be a barely-reminiscent series of fluffy, disposable dance tunes. Remarkably, though, a decade on, these tunes still sound bright, brash and refreshing as the enormous smily that adorns this album's cover. Old Skool Euphoria spans the broad dance terrain of the early 1990s, from the chart-friendly pop-rave overground to the darker strains of emergent techno, jungle and progressive house, and surprisingly, for a compilation mixed by boiler-suited acid-house commandos Altern-8-an act once mocked as the novelty face of hardcore-it's remarkably gimmick-free. No "Ebeneezer Goode" or "Sesame's Treet" here: instead, ancient rave treasures such as LFO's "LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix)" and Renegade Soundwave's "Phantom" rub up against joyful pop epiphanies such as Sonz of a Loop Da Loop Era's "Far Out" and Snap's "Rhythm Is A Dancer". Classics one and all, this is the perfect reminder of a day when dance music was unpretentious and a whole lot of fun. -Louis Pattison.
