Review DJ Kicks - Playgroup / Playgroup:Trevor Jackson (formerly known as hip-hop producer The Underdog) has built up some serious beat credentials over the years-the kind that would make most so called "underground" artists look like manufactured boy bands. Even his recent Playgroup project-by far his most accessible and "poppy" work to date-managed to retain a definite keep-it-real feel amid the shiny, feel good blend of punk, hip-hop, funk and disco. Here, the stalwart presents the next instalment of K7's esteemed DJ Kicks series. With over two decades of involvement with music under his belt and no associations to any fixed genre, Jackson must have had a nightmare trying to slim his options down to album length. He's done it though, and with skill and aplomb, stringing together 23 tracks that range from the 70s/80s era of Human League ("Do or Die") and Flying Lizards ("House of Jealous Lovers") up to more modern offering like Metro Area's "Caught Up" and I:Cube's reworking of Ana Rago's "You're God". On the whole, the mix feels retro and contemporary all at the same time; it's subtle asperity fitting in nicely with the current revival in louche 80s electro. Review We Are the Night [VINYL] / Chemical Brothers:Recorded in a bombproof subterranean studio in south London, the Chemical Brother's sixth studio album, We Are the Night brings us more of the duo's famed block rockin' psychedelia. Shot through with trademark acidic bleeps, sidereal synths and thrusting basslines, We Are the Night gets off to a strong yet stormless start with the level-headed title track, and solid but less-than-incendiary cuts like "All Rights Reversed," (which features new ravers The Klaxons) and "Do It Again. " Only on the irrefutable "Saturate" do the duo begin to reach their form: a building, twisting, highly infectious tune that blends baggy drums with washes of kaleidoscopic electronica. "Das Spiegel" takes on minimal house with endearing consequences, while former Pharcyde rapper Fatlip waxes lyrical on the decidedly fishy "Salmon Dance. " Things hot up again with "A Modern Midnight Conversation," and its thudding disco b line and "Battle Scars," with distinctive husky vocals provided by Willy Mason. "Harpoons" and "The Pills Won't Help You Now" end the trip on a suitably phantasmagoric note; though not much on We Are the Night approaches their glory years, it does reinforce their continued relevance in terms of twisted, danceable, electronic music. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Transitions Vol.2 / John Digweed:Does any DJ listen to more music than John Digweed? Hard to say, but the fact that Diggers is known to go through all the music he receives, personally, may have something to do with why he has-perhaps wisely-elected to release a single Transitions disc twice a year (instead of the two-disc compilations that seem to be the norm for other DJs). Not only does this give listeners a snapshot of his ever-evolving mixes, it allows him to capitalize on the fact that, as one of the biggest names in the business, he has access to all sorts of exclusives and upfront tracks, such as Guy Gerber's remix of "Dana," a glowing spellbinder that has yet to be released. On its heels comes Antena's portentous "Camino del Sol (Joakim Mix)," which promises an inescapable hook from the first appearance of its chunky synths, itself followed by the ultra-refined shadow play of Williams's "The Shivering (Pitch and Hold in Camera Obscura Remix). " Digweed obviously understands better than anyone that the impact of each track is largely determined by how it relates to all the others. As always, his programming can leave listeners dumbfounded; tracks like David K's off-kilter minimal trip "Boul de Nerf" may lead to some initial head-scratching. But then there is that rule of thumb that never fails with Digweed: "listen again. " -Brent Kallmer.

Review Back to Mine - MJ Cole / M.J. Cole:Once hailed as "the future of UK garage", MJ Cole has been a little quiet since the release of his debut two years ago. Thankfully Back to Mine have provided a great way for him to ease himself back into the spotlight with a great collection of 15 tracks chosen and mixed by him for their series of downbeat after-hours music. Kicking off with (if kicking is the right word) the incredibly mellow but strangely powerful trip-hop of Lee Curtis' "For Louise", which peters out into a wash of sound before the Cinematic Orchestra creep in with "Diabolus". From then on MJ's mix really starts to weave its magic with every track carefully placed for maximum effect, progressing from trip-hop to hip-hop to reggae and then onto the feistiest track on the album, a Jazzanova remix of Cole's "Sincere". A quick cooling off by way of some Ravel then dim the lights for a few lovin' soul numbers courtesy of Omar (remember him) and the Commodores. Chuck in a bit of Zero 7, a Groove Armada remix and some chilled drum & bass from Bukem then wallop, you're all invited back to his. The only oddity that should be mentioned is the lack of any two-step or garage, the nearest moment being Cole's mix of Goldie's "I Believe" towards the end, but even if you're a fan of Cole for his own work every track is still a gem, making this a very worthy addition to the Back to Mine series. -David Trueman.
