Review Ayia Napa - The Album / Shanks & Bigfoot:Shanks and Bigfoot, who bought us the classic "Sweet Like Chocolate", have done garage lovers proud with Ayia Napa-The Album. These two CDs have enough anthems between them to make you weep with joy and run to the travel agent for a ticket out to the latest party island. From B15 Project featuring Crissy D and Lady G's "Girls like U" to Stanton Warriors remix of Jocelyn Brown's seminal "Somebody Else's Guy" there is never a dull moment, with each mix carefully thought out and perfectly executed. Shanks and Bigfoot provide plenty of new material but luckily are not afraid to include old floor-fillers like their own "Straight from the Heart" as Doolally. There are 42 tracks from a diverse selection of artists-from new boy on the block Craig David to old-school heroes like Monie Love and Noodles (here in the guise of Groove Chronicles). -Danny Johnstone.

Review Sinking / Aloof:On Sinking, The Aloof emulated the heights and sublime depths of Massive Attack. Moving elegantly through a bromide of dub, reverb and irradiated swathes of strings and keyboards, creamy-sweet vocalist Ricky Barrow sings downbeat songs wallowing in sleaze and self loathing. "One Night Stand" is a sordid lament on the part of a serial stud at his inability to care for women; "Stuck On The Shelf"'s chorus of "Come on over here and have some fun" sounds about as healthy as that of a loiterer in a dirty mac outside a school playground; while "Abuse" is a chronicle of body-poisoning bad habits. Yet all of this negativity is couched in some of the most uplifting and expansive dance rhythms of the 1990s. -David Stubbs.
