Review Creamfields 2001: Mixed By Seb Fontaine & Yousef / Various Artists:If you couldn't make Creamfields this year, fear not, because resident DJs Seb Fontaine and Yousef bring the spirit of the party into your very own living room with two exceptionally crafted mixes that won't get mud on the carpet. Fontaine, legendary for his main room sets at the club's Liverpool base, pushes all the right buttons with a pumping, prog-house set that's just this side of twisted. Mutiny's "The Virus" gets the thumbs up, here reinfected with a solid mix from King Unique, while Xpress 2's "Smoke Machine" tears the roof off with its huge groove and massive foghorn breakdown. Shame about Harry Choo Choo Romero's beligerent "I Want Out", but the Chemical Brother's hyper remix of Fatboy Slim's "Song for Shelter" and Orinioko's cinematic "Island" make up for the odd duff track. Meanwhile, backroom boy, Yousef, sticks with his trademark funky house, morphing slinky numbers like Cesar Del Rio's "Simpre Juntos", Chief Rocker's "Fat Head" and his own track,! Review Tranceports [Us Import] / Paul Oakenfold:Of all the genres within electronic music, trance probably gets the worst rap. The music is guilty by association with the hippies that worship it with a religious-like fervour. And if executed poorly, its dramatic crescendos sound like pretentious, pompous pap. But a good trance DJ can save a string of the genre's records from falling down the drain of all-too-common gargantuan breakdowns and endless wind-ups. Paul Oakenfold might be the DJ to rescue trance from itself; Tranceport features a veritable who's who of trance records and producers-Sasha's remix of Gus Gus's "Purple", a few tracks from seminal trance producer Paul van Dyk, and the driving, impenetrable "Enervate" by Transa. Oakenfold's mixing is impeccably suited to trance: long, drawn-out bleeds of sound seep from one transcendent track to the next. -Tricia Romano.
