Review Sunday 8pm/Saturday 3am / Faithless:Faithless are actually a band of multiple faiths, both musical and spiritual, including Buddhism, hippy idealism and rave fanaticism. All these elements are sublimated into their dance sound, and after their mid-Nineties million-selling single "Insomnia", they were mistakenly dismissed as disposable Euro-house. The diversity of Sunday, 8pm gives the lie to this notion. It's galvanising dance music for sure, with big, overarching crowd-pleasing synth riffs courtesy of keyboardist Sister Bliss and non-performing Brian Wilson-style programmer Rollo. But then Boy George guests on "Why Go", a big ballad with a simple plea, while "Bring My Family Back" and "Take The Long Way Home" feature quietly intense, first-person raps reminiscent of Massive Attack, whose shadowy, ominous sense of melancholy is in evidence throughout the album. So when "God Is A DJ" breaks through the clouds and fills the dancefloor, it's more than just easy triumphalist hedonism; it is a blessed relief, a pleasure earned. -David Stubbs.

Review behind the sun / Chicane:Since the release of his debut album, Far From The Maddening Crowds, Chicane's Nick Bracegirdle has been a bit of a busy chap. After tastefully reupholstered the Clannad classic "Theme From Harry's Game" into a melodic-trance masterpiece, he then confounded all expectations by taking rock atheist Bryan Adams to the top of the charts with the friskily euphoric "Don't Give Up". These pop-dance lovelies only paint half the picture though. In between the strident hooks and glacial breakdowns which characterise his Ibizan leanings, Bracegirdle also demonstrates a not-to-be-wasted classical training. The rest of the album pitches moist, velvety pads against ear-tickling flute and a smooth, cocooning ambience. The wistful "Autumn Tactics" glides along like a loved-up Beth Orton-distant guitars chiming over whispered breakbeats, while "Low Sun" taking the baton from A Man Called Adam is like a pure Balearic dawn. Review Cross / Justice:Justice is the moniker of the Paris-based production duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. Their approach to crazy-quilt dance-pop hybridism is infectious, if a tad off-putting here and there. The duo rose to fame due to an MP3 single and super smart video for the excellent, kiddy-chorused house-pop number "D. A. N. C. E. " in 2007, and they soon thereafter signed to the suitably named label Banger. They manage to make really silly and fun music in a way that frequently comes off in a pretentious manner. It's ridiculous to name your album after a symbol, especially if it's †. [+]This is not meant derogatorily. Really. Justice does appear to be that rare breed of dance artist equally capable of stimulating the body and the mind, though neither Richard James nor Basement Jaxx need fear this act. After just one listen to "Waters of Nazareth," it's very difficult to avoid wondering "how the hell did they mix and match noise and pop so beautifully" while also dancing furiously. -Mike McGonigal.

Review Back to Mine - Groove Armada / Groove Armada:Prior to the breakthrough success of their second album, "Vertigo", Groove Armada [Tom Findlay and Andy Cato] were better known as successful club DJs, plying their trade in clubs the length and breadth of the country, from Tangled in Manchester to The End in London. For their first mix CD they eschew up-tempo dancefloor tunes in favour of a far more laid-back repertoire-think "At The River" rather than "If Everybody Looked The Same". Back to Mine is an eclectic mixture of classic and modern-from Barry White to Tears For Fears stopping at all stations along the way. Unlike many of these compilations, there's not a duff track on there, with stand-out tracks like Al Green's "Light My Fire" and Tony D's "Piano Grand" the cherry on the icing on the cake. Vertigo was justifiably lauded as the "Best Chill Out Album" at the Ministry Magazine Awards in 1999-Back To Mine is a worthy heir to the throne. -Helen Marquis.

Review Crazy Itch Radio / Basement Jaxx:The dust has barely settled from their recent The Singles retrospective but Basement Jaxx are back on the floor with a brand new studio album. Crazy Itch Radio, built around the concept of a radio station (complete with interludes and skits), begins with an absurdly dramatic intro before flowing into the contrastively slinky, feel-good single "Hush Boy", a slick, mellow mash-up of styles that wouldn't be out of place on the duo's kaleidoscopic debut Remedy. Indeed, Crazy Itch… unfolds with a fluidity and infectious joie-de-vivre not really seen since first album. The ease with which tracks like banjo-house anthem "Take Me Back To Your House" and "Hey You!" spill from the speakers in colourful floods of cinematic strings, Balkan folk references, house beats and rock guitars, pays testament to the duo's outstanding studio alchemy. Elsewhere on the album they make grime sound fun ("Run 4 Cover"), pay coruscating tribute to marijuana ("Bubbles") and drop the odd slow number ("Lights Go Down").
