Best known for his production duties on Madonna's Ray Of Light-hauling the diva into the post-electronica world, investing her sound with a tougher, more contemporary edge-Orbit's own music has been overlooked. Apart from being the man who bought Beth Orton (his onetime lover) to attention, he's also released four solo albums-all appearing under the Strange Cargo banner-of which this 1987 effort was the first. If nothing else, it serves as a showcase for his technical proficiency: traditional muso-types who dismiss Orbit as a mere knob-twiddler, lost without his machines, will be astounded by the level of guitar virtuosity on display here. And the production is as immaculate as one would expect. But for all its flawless surface, there's a discernible lack of heart to this album: many tracks ("Fire And Mercy," "Out Of The Ice") seem more like problem-solving exercises than actual compositions, while others ("The Mighty Limpopo", "Theme Dream") sound like nothing so much as factory-installed demos for particularly expensive pieces of software. -Andrew McGuire.

Vanessa-Mae, vehemently opposed to any "compartmentalising of music", describes the material on this album as "techno-acoustic fusion". As far as instrumentation and recording techniques go, that's a pretty fair description. But when the subtitle is "The Classical Album" , Vanessa-Mae and her producer/composer Mike Batt (of Wombles fame) stand accused of misleading their audience. Apart from the opening "Toccata in D", one of the prodigy Vanessa-Mae's favourite show pieces, all tracks are original compositions, most of them by Batt. What we hear are contemporary, poppy pieces, rock drum and keyboard-based, and tailor made for Vanessa-Mae's high-energy yet delicate virtuosity. The fact that the talented Batt is audibly influenced by Michael Nyman does not make his compositions more "classical", but thankfully steers them out of the tedious realm of "Classic Rock". "Widescreen" is a track where the Mae-Batt synthesis works very well; both violinist and producer making the most of the technology-meets-tradition concept. Some of this is film score material, some shopping-mall ear drum fodder, other tracks yet again, revisit Mike Oldfield's old pastures-it is a matter of discussion whether this album "defies all labelling" or simply makes a point of wooing them all in pursuit of the widest possible audience. A far deeper, more enduring outing than his spectacular 1991 debut. Producer Trevor Horn calls on a cast of dozens (including Joni Mitchell who duets on the lovely "If I Could" and the ubiquitous Jeff Beck) and channels his famous, over-the-top tendencies into a sumptuous bed of sound that makes Tears for Fears sound minimal. Soulful first single "Prayer for the Dying" will set the pace, while "Kiss From A Rose" is a huge ballad. -Jeff Bateman.

Hailed as being the "future of UK garage" and the "messiah of two-step", MJ Cole had a lot to live up to with his debut album. Fortunately for him (and for us) he steps up to the challenge with utmost confidence. Sincere is one of those albums that, no matter what mood you're in urges a constant rewind. The strength of the album lies primarily in its contrasts. Naturally Cole's classical training comes in handy on the arrangements and provides a smoothness that is lacking from most UK garage music. By employing lush strings and setting Elizabeth Troy's soulful vocals centre stage, songs like "Tired Games", "Attitude" and "Sincere" come across as the anthems. He tempers the coffee table vibe with a "street" roughness, aimed mainly at the beats and basslines and utilising the obligatory 2 step MC, Danny Vicious' flow. -Paul Sullivan.

Although Leftfield's Leftism may take the title of best album by a British dance artist, the debut LP from Underworld was a sublime collage of lush textures and insistent beats which displayed the kind of dynamic ambition which has made their live shows so exciting. The daft-yet-heartfelt vocals of Karl Hyde drift amongst Rick Smith's controlled guitar and Darren Emerson's mesmerising drum patters, an intoxicating blend on tracks such as "Mmm. Skyscraper", "I Love You" and "Cowgirl". "Tongue", meanwhile, shows a gentler, warmer side to the band, as Hyde's tones wrap themselves lovingly around subtle chords, while the lush melodies and uplifiting ambience of "M. E. " provide a worthy finale. The rarest of things: a varied, emotional dance album that doesn't sacrifice authenticity for innovation. -Ed Potton.

From the outset, with Donny X's spine-tingling synth-swathes and brooding sub-bass, it's evident that Outrospective plays to Faithless' strengths. The band has always been more than just a dance act. Deft practitioners of all areas of modern music, it is affecting textures, seductive atmospheres and haunting melodrama, with dance culture as a back-drop, that's their real forte. First single "We Come 1" is the safe banker, combining Rollo's unnerving soundscapes, Sister Bliss' dancefloor mentality and rapper Maxi Jazz's deadpan voice to recall the power of previous best "Insomnia". "We Come 1", like "Tarantula" and "Machines R Us", also represents an upping of bpm that reasserts their club relevance-something which had diminished with last long-player, the down-cast Sunday 8pm. There's also a marginal upping of optimism with the gorgeous "One Step Too Far" (with the inevitable appearance of Rollo's sister Dido) and Philly Soul of "Muhammad Ali", with Maxi Jazz singing, literally, the praises of his childhood hero, also countering Sunday 8pm's gloom. But the lure of their third album, as ever, lies in Maxi Jazz's chilling monologues. The voice of inner thoughts, desires and conflict, there's nothing quite as arresting as when he quietly muses on "Not Enuff Love": "Money in my pocket / But I just can't give no love". -Dan Gennoe.

Once again Cream go out of their way to bring the soul back to dance music. Cream Classics Volume 2 builds on the successful first compilation and brings back some of that fantastic old skool. You get a triple CD Box Set with 50 of Creams favourite dance fillers going right back into the 80's; now that's old skool. There is a truly interesting selection of music here that spans a wide spectrum of dance. It's an historical account of tunes from the last couple of decades that helped to define the genre. You won't find a foul tune on any of the CDs, which are all very listenable. You will, however, find some real gems. Going all the way back, New Order's "Blue Monday" is very nostalgic. Some real turn-of-the-decade, defining-times, tracks are included like Orbital's "Chime" and The Future Sound of London's "Papua New Guinea. There is a definite lean toward funky house on this box-set, which adds some real life to the electronic sounds. [+]

Songs like Jamiroquai's "Space Cowboy" and Moby's "Go" are great dance tunes. There are also some genuine classics to be found here. The Sneaker Pimp's "Spin Spin Sugar" and Armand Van Helden's "The Funk Phenomena" stand out in particular. Some careful thought has gone into the track selection and the mixing is smooth and progressive. The songs tend to get better and better and disk three is quite fantastic. This is a must have for any house fan's collection. Defining tunes that sound as good today blasting from the speakers as they did throughout the 90s. -Jarrod Rendle.

Prior to the breakthrough success of their second album, "Vertigo", Groove Armada [Tom Findlay and Andy Cato] were better known as successful club DJs, plying their trade in clubs the length and breadth of the country, from Tangled in Manchester to The End in London. For their first mix CD they eschew up-tempo dancefloor tunes in favour of a far more laid-back repertoire-think "At The River" rather than "If Everybody Looked The Same". Back to Mine is an eclectic mixture of classic and modern-from Barry White to Tears For Fears stopping at all stations along the way. Unlike many of these compilations, there's not a duff track on there, with stand-out tracks like Al Green's "Light My Fire" and Tony D's "Piano Grand" the cherry on the icing on the cake. Vertigo was justifiably lauded as the "Best Chill Out Album" at the Ministry Magazine Awards in 1999-Back To Mine is a worthy heir to the throne. -Helen Marquis.
