Review Led Zeppelin [CASSETTE] / Led Zeppelin:

Here are the original monsters of rock in all their epic, bombastic glory. The Who may have had more decibels (a dubious distinction), but no band took hard rock higher into the stratosphere than the Zep did with their cosmic mixture of deep blues, gothic melodrama and the supernatural chops of Page, Plant, Bonham and Jones. For listeners new to the Zep canon, there's no better primer of the band's range and power than this four CD box set, compiled and remixed in 1990 by Page himself. All the obvious song choices are here but even if you've already heard "Black Dog" once too often on the car radio, this set wisely spotlights several overlooked gems, including their ultimate blues lament "I'm Gonna Crawl". It's a blueprint that later generations of head-bangers tragically failed to follow. -Steve Appleford.

Review If You Want Blood You've Got It [CASSETTE] / AC:

The duelling guitars of the Young brothers, here still combined with the superlatively demonic tones of original singer Bon Scott, have never been so well showcased as on this live album from their Powerage tour. Masters of the killer riff, AC/DC were at this stage still in full command of the tongue-in-cheek Australian energy that served them so well. With Angus Young's crackling lead guitar fluently tearing up every solo spot he gets with exuberant panache and Bon Scott exuding equal helpings of leering menace and outsider humour, the result is a superlatively potent brew. Above all, their music has a real sense of dynamics, space and pace-essential for any such music to be truly effective. All of this album is essential listening, but in particular don't miss "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be", "Whole Lotta Rosie" and "Problem Child". -James Swift.

Review Physical Graffiti [CASSETTE] / Led Zeppelin:

This 1975 release came smack in the middle of a long and nearly mythic career. Physical Graffiti is the last great Led Zeppelin title, recorded before the influences of the day (synthesizers, disco) ended Zeppelin's reign as the kings of loud and sexy blues-metal. Playfully experimenting with new sounds, the band blended Middle Eastern rhythms, folk-stylings, heavy blues, and deeply impassioned rock riffs into a two-disc set that sounded as if they were still enjoying their place in the rock pantheon. As sprawling and adventurous as this collection is, there are some tracks so tightly focused-so ultra-Zeppelinesque-that it's tempting to name this as a number one or number two must-have. "Trampled Underfoot" and "Custard Pie" alone are almost worth the double-disc price tag. -Lorry Fleming.

Review DLR Band [CASSETTE] / David Lee Roth:

Diamond David Lee Roth is back in all his self-congratulatory glory. "My game is better than ever / Winners, they come and go / Legends, they're forever", he boasts on "Slam Dunk!" while his backup musicians play a galloping, surging rhythm that sounds much like early Van Halen. This will come as good news to the legions of old-VH fans mourning the group's hastily aborted reunion effort of the mid 1990s. Roth's voice still oozes with sleaze and his charisma is palpable, even if he can't scream with the authority of days past. But bear in mind that the DLR Band features one original Van Halen member. Guitarist John Lowery is a studio whiz, capable of approximating Eddie Van Halen's harmonic squeals and lightning-fast leads, but neither he nor Roth can write like Eddie. While tunes such as "Slam Dunk!", "Counter-Blast" and "Little Texas" sound punchy, they lack that knockout blow Van Halen once delivered so effectively. Elsewhere, the DLR Band sound like prime-era Led Zeppelin, with Roth as frontman. Dlr Band is certainly a fun listen. Just don't expect the second coming of Van Halen. [+]

Review Gems [CASSETTE] / Aerosmith:

Nobody swaggers with quite the same level of savage assurance as Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. Aerosmith's titanic Toxic Twins have steadily gravitated from humble Boston beginnings to become the foremost rock & roll swashbucklers in the entire cosmos. Alongside their long-time partners in excess, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer, they've laid down some of the true classics of their chosen genre, and Gems is a sonic jewel case of delights. The band have always been well served with greatest hits packages, but Gems concentrates on oft-forgotten album tracks from their truly illustrious past. Consequently, alongside such feral garage-blasters as "Mamma Kin" you'll find their celebrated assault on "Train Kept A Rollin" and Tyler's semi-autobiographical, self-aggrandising AOR staple "Lord Of The Thighs". If you're in search of power ballad heaven, then look elsewhere, but if you're taste is for uncommonly salacious hard rock, you've just hit the jackpot. -Ian Fortnam.
