Review Return Of Saturn / No Doubt:

After No Doubt sold more than 10 million copies of Tragic Kingdom, riding that wave of success without toppling over must have been a daunting mission. No sweat for No Doubt. The band had toiled as unknowns with a loyal local following for a decade before that album's release, and during that time the band members were learning how to be better songwriters and musicians. The follow-up, Return Of Saturn, glides along that continuum of songcraft perfection. The band presents a cleaner, less apologist representation of their influences. They pull off some of the more difficult manoeuvres of pure reggae, ground-pounding ska, and Cars-esque New Wave. Gwen Stefani belts a powerful pout, her Mae West-meets- Siouxsie Sioux vocal bravado is the bungee cord that springs in between the band's retro tendencies and SoCal pop-punk attitude. Songs such as "Bathwater" and "Ex-Girlfriend" reveal the singer's vulnerability to being hurt or dumped on, and the band's sense of humour and exploration (albeit firmly controlled) matches the songs' sentiments. This group is growing out and tightening up, and while the rest of the ska-punk surfer-dude bands do nothing more than repeat history, No Doubt is creating it. -Beth Massa.

Review The Golden Hum / Remy Zero:

The Golden Hum, Remy Zero's first release in three years, finds the band in control of its vision, reigning in its ambitions and creating an album of richly textured rock songs. While the band are often compared to R. E. M. and Radiohead, a more appropriate comparison now would be David Bowie. Finding inspiration in the early hook-filled albums like Hunky Dory and the musical experimentation of the "Berlin" albums (Low, Lodger and Heroes), Remy Zero have crafted an album that displays the best elements of glam-rock. Eschewing the feather boas and silly pretence that often passes for glam, The Golden Hum is filled with big riffs, subtle hooks and soaring vocals. And like the best rock bands, Remy Zero revels in the music's contradictions: dark and uplifting, cynical and hopeful. -Adam Silverman.

Review Brassbound / Ordinary Boys:

The second album from The Ordinary Boys, Brassbound finds this mod-styled Brighton bootboys evolving from the Weller-style Britpop of their debut, Over The Counter Culture, making explicit the dub, reggae, and ska influences that previously only lurked in the shadows. It's a wise move, as the rollicking opening salvo of "Brass Bound" and "Boys Will Be Boys" - a natty, brass-laden number featuring Rankin Junior of reunited ska legends The Beat - neatly demonstrates. But there's room for reflection within, too: frontman Sam Preston's songwriting has audibly matured since the Boys' debut, his skill for light nostalgia and Morrissey-esque poeticism feeding into "Life Will Be The Death Of Me" and the cautionary "Don't Live Too Fast" - a song about "knowing what it means/To be bursting at the seams". Meanwhile, a cover of obscure `60s Birmingham outfit Locomotive's "Rudi Can't Fail" proves Ordinary Boys know their history, and confirms there's nothing wrong with a spot of retro, just so long as the movements you're cherry-picking from still sound alive and kicking. -Louis Pattison.

Review Does This Look Infected? / Sum 41:

Sum 41's mega-hit All Killer No Filler lifted riffs from Motley Crue and the Beastie Boys to make a formidably dumb racket, but Does This Look Infected, the follow-up, finds the Canadian quartet reining in its spiky-haired insolence. Drawing musical inspiration from toothy metal icons Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, Does This Look Infected? is not only meatier than its predecessor, but songs such as "Still Waiting", with its opening refrain of "So am I still waiting, for this world to stop hating," and "Yesterday. com", reveal social consciousness creeping in. The album is not completely deprived of the goofy, booger-gobbling skate punk that launched the band, but it provides convincing evidence that the News has taken over CITV as Sum 41's preferred tour-bus viewing. -Aidin Vaziri.
