Review Red Sparowes / At the Soundless Dawn
Tracks At the Soundless Dawn
  • Alone and unaware, the landscape was transformed in front of our eyes.
  • Mechanical sounds cascaded through the city walls and everyone reveled in their ignorance.
  • Our happiest days slowly began to turn into dust.
  • The sixth extinction crept up slowly, like sunlight through the shutters, as we looked back in regret.
  • A brief moment of clarity broke through the deafening hum, but it was too late.
  • The soundless dawn came alive as cities began to mark the horizon.
  • Buildings began to stretch wide across the sky, and the air filled with a reddish glow.

Review Mescalero / ZZ Top:

Midway through their fourth decade, ZZ Top-the "Little Ol' Band from Texas"-have lost none of their preternatural affinity for the blues. But, as Mescalero ably demonstrates, that love continues to be informed by a restless sonic creativity that keeps it remarkably fresh. Proving he remains a fan of pop music in all its incarnations, band mainstay Billy Gibbons employs a grease'n'grit production that gives a surprisingly contemporary edge, whether on the grunge-meets-techno rattle of "Me So Stupid", the emblematic Top boogie "Buck Nekkid" or the zydeco-tinged lugubriousness of "Alley-Gator". But Gibbons and company's alternately lo-fi and electro sensibilities also take intriguing detours down country roads on "Goin' So Good" and "What Would You Do", while the en espanol "Que Lastima" sees them stray rewardingly across the Rio Grande for inspiration. The bluesy, hip-hop experimentalism of "Crunchy" and "Dusted" offers up more angular treats, morphing effortlessly into the patented, greasy boogie of "Liquor", then a country-blues cover/hidden track/coda of the chestnut "As Time Goes By"-the warmest surprise of an album already blessed with more than its share of invention. -Jerry McCulley.

Review The Sinister Urge / Rob Zombie:

With The Sinister Urge, Rob Zombie again wraps his rasp around a thunderous blend of heavy grooves powered by human and electronic drums. Creepy touches of theremin and keyboards add Goth accents, while the clever arrangements adorn melodies that are irresistibly catchy yet plenty aggressive. The lyrics are set firmly in a horror realm; with titles such as "House of 1000 Corpses" and "Scum of the Earth", one wouldn't anticipate tender love songs. Zombie scatters about sound bites from monster movies for good measure-an apt touch, but with the album clocking in at less than 40 minutes, there's a bit too much filler. Still, with highlights such as "Bring Her Down" with its spine-tingling orchestration, the hard-driving "Dead Girl Superstar" (featuring Slayer guitarist Kerry King), and "Feel So Numb" Zombie generates much genuine excitement. -Gail Flug.

Review The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle: Highlights / Sex Pistols:

Given that punk was supposed to blow away the hegemony of self-appointed "albums" artists, it's perhaps a little optimistic to expect a classic album by the Sex Pistols. Some would say that Never Mind The Bollocks was indeed such a thing; few though, would make the same claim about this, the accompanying album to the band's eponymous movie. That's not, however, to say that The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle doesn't yield some top moments: "God Save The Queen" and "Anarchy In The UK" still remain as beautifully nihilistic as pop can get. Alas though, Glen Matlock didn't stick around long enough to write a few more. What fills the gaps, in his absence, is a slew of occasionally amusing novelty songs ("Who Killed Bambi", Sid's "My Way", "Friggin In The Riggin"), lame covers ("Substitute", "Johnny B Goode", the afro-funk Pistols medley "Black Arabs") and a charming cameo from great train robber Ronnie Biggs on "Belsen Was A Gas". Perhaps you had to be there. -Peter Paphides.
