Review The Sinister Urge / Rob Zombie:With The Sinister Urge, Rob Zombie again wraps his rasp around a thunderous blend of heavy grooves powered by human and electronic drums. Creepy touches of theremin and keyboards add Goth accents, while the clever arrangements adorn melodies that are irresistibly catchy yet plenty aggressive. The lyrics are set firmly in a horror realm; with titles such as "House of 1000 Corpses" and "Scum of the Earth", one wouldn't anticipate tender love songs. Zombie scatters about sound bites from monster movies for good measure-an apt touch, but with the album clocking in at less than 40 minutes, there's a bit too much filler. Still, with highlights such as "Bring Her Down" with its spine-tingling orchestration, the hard-driving "Dead Girl Superstar" (featuring Slayer guitarist Kerry King), and "Feel So Numb" Zombie generates much genuine excitement. -Gail Flug.

Review Y34RZ3r0r3mix3d + DVD / Nine Inch Nails:Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D-or "Year Zero Remixed", if you don't do leetspeak, is the latest example of Trent Reznor's urge to see Nine Inch Nails material dissected, reworked, mistreated and reinterpreted by his friends and peers. For many artists, remix albums are by their nature slightly uneven collections, lacking the common thread that makes a good record a consistent piece of work-yet past NIN offerings like 1995's Further Down the Spiral have somehow bucked this trend, and Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D is no exception. This isn't, you suspect so much to do with any similarities between the artists-everyone's here from British synth-poppers Ladytron to beat poet Saul Williams to minimalist classical ensemble Kronos Quartet-as it is the consistency of Reznor's vision; no matter how thorough the audio mangling, his damaged humanity still has a habit of poking through the gaps. Highlights include the smudged ambience of Fennesz's take on "In This Twilight" and the immersive, abstract techno of Olof Dreijer's 15 minute remix of "Me I'm Not", but the real coup here is two mixes by Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert of New Order that pull off machine-like synth-pop and drifting vintage electronics ambience leaving Reznor's vocals wholly intact. -Louis Pattison.

Review The Long Road [Digipak - Bonus Track] / Nickelback:It's never easy following up a multi-platinum success, yet with The Long Road, Canada's Nickelback seem sure to match the sales of the many-million-selling Silver Side Up. The formula remains pretty much the same. Nothing fancy, just radio-friendly grunge-rock lending an appropriately dramatic backing to the powerful and increasingly confident voice of Chad Kroeger, the undoubted star of this show. Aside from the fast and punchy opener "Flat on the Floor", the tough, staccato "Because of You" and the Oasis-recalling "Figured You Out", the band deal exclusively in soft-rock anthems (soft, that is, by 2003's pulverising standards), the strong vocal melodies encouraging stadium sing-alongs. Indeed, the closing "See You at the Show" seems deliberately designed for crowd interaction. The only real change is in Kroeger's lyrical concerns. Where 2000's The State saw him suffering the frustrations and claustrophobic complexities of small town life, now he's tortured by a heavy touring schedule (the long road of the title, one presumes) that promotes destructive drug abuse and strains his attempted relationships to breaking point. That said, you can't help feeling the ruthlessly analytical Kroeger would turn a visit to the supermarket into a riot of hatred and self-recrimination. For fans of Silver Side Up, Nickelback have delivered the goods once more. -Dominic Wills.
