Review Much Against Everyone's Advice / Soulwax:Thank Beck, but modern-day alternative rock is all about fusion. On Much Against Everyone's Advice, Belgian electronic funk-punk rockers Soulwax are horribly eager to keep all posts covered, and if they never quite achieve the kitsch majesty of Mr Hansen's Midnite Vultures, then at least on the juddering techno workout of "Conversation Intercom", or the Black-Sabbath-gone-hip-hop beat-fest of "Too Many DJs" they add a whole new spin to the conveyor-belt of MTV-friendly angst. The problem is, over the length of Much Against Everyone's Advice, it never seems to be quite enough. There's too many understated interludes-see the eminently forgettable likes of "More Than This" and "Scream"-to make Much Against Everyone's Advice any more than a entertaining diversion. It seems that even in Soulwax's cutting-edge super-futuristic worldview, there's room for an inordinate amount of filler, and in its attempt to claim every genre under the sun, Much Against Everyone's Advice spreads itself too thin. -Louis Pattison END.

Review Dark Light / HIM:Partly thanks to their skill for anthemic soft rock, and partly thanks to the heart-throb status of vocalist Ville Hermani Vallo, Finland's H. I. M have risen to become one of the most visible acts on the European goth scene. On this, their fourth album, high production values, courtesy of U2/The Cure producer Tim Palmer, and a broad sonic repertoire that includes piano, violin and cello gel to form H. I. M's most accessible album yet (and that's saying something; this band were never exactly Sonic Youth). "Under The Rose" is perhaps the record's catchiest moment, Vallo swooning "I've been burning in water/And drowning in flames" over some tight, gothic-tinged arpeggios courtesy of guitarist Lily Lazer. Much of H. I. M's oeuvre continues to dwell on matters of the heart, the likes of "Killing Loneliness" and "Vampire Heart" mostly concerned with the prospect of finding love in a dark world. [+]That said, it's important to point out, though, that there's more to this band than pleasing teenage girls: "In The Night-Side Of Eden" fuses sprawling, progressive complexity to croaked gothic vocals, an interesting diversion that belies H. Review Red White & Crue / Mötley Crüe:There is no shortage of Motley Crue hits collections out there, but this one just might be the definitive. All the essentials are on disc one, which is generously crammed with choice cuts from the Aqua Net years, before Vince Neil outgrew the spandex and Tommy Lee found his true calling in amateur porn-from the sleek glam rock of "Too Fast for Love" and strip-club anthem "Girls, Girls, Girls" to the runny mascara ballad "Without You" and comedy hocus-pocus of "Shout at the Devil. " Having just barely survived the 80s, the band gets inexplicably serious on the second half of the collection, delving into such utterly forgettable noise as "Planet Boom" and "Generation Swine. " But there's no reason to fret-the compilation is merely doing its job and succeeds brilliantly in tracing the rise and fall of a band whose legacy is turning out to be far greater than anyone ever imagined. -Aidin Vaziri.
