Review The Better Life / 3 Doors Down:

The Mississippi-based quartet 3 Doors Down has only one thing that sets them apart from other hard rock bands: lead vocalist Brad Arnold is also the drummer. The group shops the sounds of Pearl Jam and the Goo Goo Dolls, pointing at what they like, picking it off the shelf and throwing it into the stew. While the music on The Better Life, their debut, sounds overall both competent and confident, the songs themselves are equally uninspired and clichéd. For example, the riff from the track "Loser" is straight out of the Alice In Chains songbook, adding much more cringe-worthy lyrics ("Addiction needs a pacifier, the buzz of this poison is taking me higher"). In fact, most of the lyrics zero in on well-worn rock themes of aggravation, confusion and frustration, feelings that 3 Doors Down will easily coax out of discriminating listeners. -Jason Josephes.

Review Global a Go-Go / Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros:

Global A Go-Go, Joe Strummer's second album with the The Mescaleros following 1999's Rock Art and The X-Ray Style mines the same concerns that have always inspired his music. "Johnny Appleseed" and "Cool 'n' Out" centre on Joe's brash eruptive guitar but hark back to his pre-punk folk busking roots, with lyrics anchored by a strong sense of indignation and social commitment. Strummer may pride himself as an original punk warlord, but he realises punk can only thrive by rejoicing in Britain's ever-vibrant multicultural melting pot as he does on "Bhindi Bagee" and the Arabic inflected refugee requiem "Shaktar Donetsk". His longstanding fascination with dub reggae fuels "At the Border, Guy", while the Marconi saluting title track celebrates the power of radio to present new worlds and unite communities. On "Mondo Bongo" he dispenses with his trademark bark for a lovely ballad laced with pre-Clash accomplice Tymon Dogg's lonesome violin. This is real anger with a big warm heart; maturity suits Strummer just fine. -Gavin Martin.

Review Once in a Red Moon / Secret Garden:

Secret Garden's latest, Once in a Red Moon, continues along the path of their previous releases such as Songs from a Secret Garden and Dawn of a New Century. Violinist Fionnuala Sherry and pianist/composer Rolf Lovland continue to combine in romantic and soulful ways around melodies that hover between the Romantic composers of the 19th century and the beautiful folk melodies and harmonies of many countries. Sherry's playing is full of passion whatever the setting, giving real red-blooded feeling to whatever musical landscape Lovland's pieces sketch out. Central to the expanded acoustic palette on this new album is the arranging skill of Kjetil Bjerkestrand, who combines absolute transparency of sound with compelling richness of texture. Guest singers Brian Kennedy and Karen Matheson illuminate lyrics to different tunes, including a re-setting of the "Danny Boy" melody that becomes a tribute to Lovland's recently deceased mother. Celtic roots are never far away throughout this thoughtful and exquisite album, giving its overall yearning quality a particular and apposite focus. -Keith Shadwick.

Review Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence / Dream Theater:

Never a band to do things by halves, Dream Theater's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is a two-disc extravaganza with a title track that clocks in at a prog-tastic 42 minutes. Following very much in the style of their previous studio release Scenes from a Memory, the "Six Degrees" piece, which occupies the entire second disc, is divided into eight movements beginning of course with the now-obligatory "Overture". It's all good, meaty stuff, but the quasi-symphonic structure isn't really justified by the music, which alternately noodles and thrashes about in a somewhat haphazard manner; while singer James LaBrie's elliptical storytelling struggles to make an impression over the rest of the band's stunningly virtuosic onslaught. The other disc has five chunky shorter pieces (averaging about 10 minutes each) which hearken back to the grungier sound of their Awake album. Guitarist John Petrucci dominates proceedings here perhaps more than he should, and only fearsome drummer Mike Portnoy can compete in the sheer volume and notes-per-second competition. The result is an album that fulfils all the fans' expectations of what this band do best. Despite the "progressive" tag, Dream Theater have, it seems, found a formula and they're sticking to it. -Mark Walker.

Review Portrait Of An American Family / Marilyn Manson:

Every parent's nightmare and every teenager's dream band, Marilyn Manson take no prisoners on their blistering and brutal Trent Reznor-produced debut. Aiming to shock and rock simultaneously, Portrait scores high marks in both arenas. Manson and his grand grimoire take Alice Cooper's tongue-in-cheek mix of glam and death rock to the nth degree with their vision of youth gone wild, personified on cuts like "Cake and Sodomy" and "Lunchbox", a schoolyard revenge fantasy gone horribly awry. One of the most original, hardest rocking albums recorded in the 1990s, Portrait of an American Family is a hallmark of the industrial/metal genre, but not for those who are easily offended. -Gail Worley.

Review Dark Light / HIM:

Partly thanks to their skill for anthemic soft rock, and partly thanks to the heart-throb status of vocalist Ville Hermani Vallo, Finland's H. I. M have risen to become one of the most visible acts on the European goth scene. On this, their fourth album, high production values, courtesy of U2/The Cure producer Tim Palmer, and a broad sonic repertoire that includes piano, violin and cello gel to form H. I. M's most accessible album yet (and that's saying something; this band were never exactly Sonic Youth). "Under The Rose" is perhaps the record's catchiest moment, Vallo swooning "I've been burning in water/And drowning in flames" over some tight, gothic-tinged arpeggios courtesy of guitarist Lily Lazer. Much of H. I. M's oeuvre continues to dwell on matters of the heart, the likes of "Killing Loneliness" and "Vampire Heart" mostly concerned with the prospect of finding love in a dark world. [+]
That said, it's important to point out, though, that there's more to this band than pleasing teenage girls: "In The Night-Side Of Eden" fuses sprawling, progressive complexity to croaked gothic vocals, an interesting diversion that belies H. I. M's reputation as unashamed crowd pleasers. -Louis Pattison.
