Review Overnite Sensation / Frank Zappa:

Best known for the infamous "Dinah-Mo-Hum"-a tale of sexual depravity and bovine perspiration- Over-Nite Sensation is a flawlessly executed collection of jazz-rock Frank Zappa classics. The seven-song set, which includes backup vocals by Tina Turner and the Ikettes, equally showcases Zappa's unique penchant for storytelling and the abilities of his studio-musician sidemen. Zappa's guitar work is also some of his finest, flaring up on "I'm the Slime", "Zomby Woof" and "Montana". Andrew Boscardin.

Review Coda / Led Zeppelin:

Coda, released in 1982 after the break-up of the band, was the result of a trawl through the studio archives in search of leftover material. In fact, they had already used up almost all of the good stuff and, compared to their other releases, this was Led Zeppelin's only disappointing album. Nevertheless, even relatively poor material by Led Zeppelin still represents a decent level of quality and some tracks are classic, particularly "Poor Tom", "Ozone Baby" and "Wearing And Tearing". The latter song, one of three out-takes from the In Through The Out Door sessions, features a particularly high-octane blend of stripped-down and grungy rock and roll and is often spoken of as their response to contemporary punk. As so little studio material was found, they added live versions of "I Can't Quit You Babe" and "We're Gonna Groove" from 1970, the first of which in particular features some blistering playing. Even so, it was still their shortest ever release. -James Swift.

Review A Quick One / The Who:

The Who's second album is a mite inconsistent, not least because all four members were encouraged by a business deal to churn out songs. A Quick One nonetheless manages several Who classics, notably "A Quick One While He's Away," Pete Townshend's first longform (10 minutes) piece, and John Entwistle's licensed-to-ill "Whiskey Man" and "Boris the Spider. " The band's sense of humor, however, gives way on rote pop tunes like Roger Daltrey's "See My Way. " But CD bonus tracks like the great "Disguises" (included in a murkier mix than that on the 30 Years of Maximum R&B boxed set) and the Beach Boys tributes "Bucket T" and "Barbara Ann" are a distinct help. -Rickey Wright.

Review Bad Reputation / Thin Lizzy:

When Thin Lizzy decamped to Canada to unwind from a year of incident and illness, the result was Bad Reputation, which sounds, if not exactly laid-back, then at least damn smooth: Phil Lynott is confident enough to loosen Lizzy's atomic boogie and open his writing to jazz and folk influences, while the band are (despite their shifting membership at the time) tighter than ever, playing with a new delicacy, less force, more thought. Scott Gorham emerges as a genuinely original guitarist, Tony Visconti's production sharpens the edges of their sound, and in the title track, "Southbound" and "Dancing In The Moonlight", Lizzy are at their handsome, deep-blue best. -Taylor Parkes.

Review Hooray For Boobies / Bloodhound Gang:

LA's Bloodhound Gang revel in their juvenilia, delight in their offensiveness. Like the Beastie Boys, Carry On's Sid James and Eminem, there's nothing these bored white-trash rich kids like to do more than be smutty. And, like the Beasties and Eminem, Bloodhound Gang are clearly rather smart underneath their parent-baiting. Check out their hilariously deadpan "A Lap Dance Is So Much Better When The Stripper Is Crying" ("I never thought missing children could be so sexy. Did I say that out loud?") or the killer pay-off line in "Three Point One Four"("You know what I really want in a girl? Me!"). The music is immaculate, state-of-the-art 1999: Sugar Ray, some refined white-boy rapping and an oddly disembodied voice thrown in. The clobber is perfect: regulation Adidas. And the samples are suitably cheesy: "Rock Me Amadeus", Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and so on. This is for anyone who appreciates the thrill of behaving like a 14-year-old schoolboy. -Everett True.
