Review Shine on / Jet:The second album by Jet, Shine On finds the Australian band coming on leaps and bounds from their acclaimed debut, Get Born. Whereas that album showcased Jet as a garage band, Shine On demonstrates that Jet are heading for bigger things altogether. It's still very much a slice of retro-rock, and Jet still wear their influences proudly on their sleeves, but they're so blatant about it that it's somehow forgiveable. Plus, it helps that their songs outstrip anything their influences have done recently, as demonstrated on the anthemic "Bring It On Back" and the ballad "Shine On" - the two best Oasis songs for years, even if they were written and recorded by Jet. Meanwhile, guitar-led songs like "King's Horses" and "Skin and Bones" would not sound out of place on classic albums by the Rolling Stones or the Faces. Elsewhere, though, it's the rockier numbers where Jet really shine, such as the catchy first single "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is", the stomping "Stand Up" and the aptly-named "Rip It Up". Any of the songs on Shine On could have been recorded in the past 40 years, and therein lies their charm. Jet have mined some of the best rock albums of the past, and in the process created an album that's destined to be a classic. -Ted Kord.

Review Jimmy Eat World / Bleed American / Jimmy Eat World:On Bleed American, emo-rock band Jimmy Eat World exemplify all that is the modern radio rock sound. Singing and playing with a conviction and sincerity that will melt the heart of even the most stoic of listeners, they produce rousing, well-crafted anthems along the lines of Third Eye Blind at their roughest or a more polished Green Day. These guys appear to be able to write ready-made singles at the drop of a hat, as evidenced by "Your House" as well as the title track. In fact, there is a rather shocking maturity to their material that belies the band members' ages (all in their 20s). While they sometimes veer into cringe-worthy power-ballad territory, overall Jimmy Eat World give the people what they want with Bleed American. -Ike Bolton.

Review Live at the Greek / Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes:Recorded in October 1999, this double-disc slab will certainly stick to your ribs, chock-full as it is of burly, brawny riffs and it is as flavourful as it is filling. Without question, the pairing of Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes sounds as strong on your player as it does on paper. Page's playing is more focused and incisive than it has been of late, the Crowes sound energized and inspired by the esteemed guest and Chris Robinson makes a fine Robert Plant. The Led Zeppelin covers, which account for 14 of the 20 tracks on Live At The Greek, stay close to the original arrangements-you can sing along most of the way based on your knowledge of the Zep studio albums. At first, this may seem disappointing, but it becomes clear very quickly that this method is preferable to any heavy-handed reworkings. And they smartly include a few lesser-known tracks as well ("Sick Again" and "Ten Years Gone" from Physical Graffiti and "Out On The Tiles" from III). The real payoff, however, comes with the half-dozen blues covers, which sound looser and more alive than the Zep tunes. This set isn't innovative, surprising or adventurous, but that's precisely where its charms lie. -Marc Greilsamer.
