Review Live in Texas: +DVD / Linkin Park:Recorded on the Dallas date of the 2003 "Summer Sanitarium" arena tour, with Metallica, Limp Bizkit et al, Live in Texas is a concise, no-frills two-disc DVD/CD souvenir of the muscular Linkin Park live experience. 5. 1 Surround Sound captures every nuance of Brad Delson's explosive guitar, the incendiary turntable flourishes of DJ Joseph Hahn, and the interplay between MC Mike Shinoda and singer Chester Bennington (although the audience singalong on "Numb" gets lost across the barricades), as the sextet runs through a tight set of selections drawn exclusively from its bestsellers Hybrid Theory and Meteora, with the big hits ("Crawling," "In the End") programmed toward the climax. Casual fans may grumble about the absence of extras-there's no backstage-with-the-band documentary or viewing angle options, no previously unreleased songs-but hardcore devotees (who get plenty of face time on the DVD) should appreciate the opportunity to revisit the thrills of Linkin Park in concert whenever they wish. -Kurt B Reighley.

Review Electric Music for the Mind and Body / Country Joe McDonald:Given their origins, both geographically (San Francisco) and stylistically (founder Joe McDonald and lead guitarist Barry Melton first hooked up in a jug band), it wasn't surprising that the ragtag Fish sounded like an acid-soaked, plugged-in folk band when they debuted in '67. Simultaneously the most political and funniest of all the Northern California bands, the Fish's yippie-hippie philosophy was reflected in songs like "Superbird" (about Lyndon Johnson), "Flying High" (about getting you-know-what), and the bluesy free love saga, "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine. " That they could periodically wax serious as well (the wide-angled instrumental "Section Forty Three" and the moody "Bass Strings") only added more bite to their satiric pungency. -Billy Altman.

Review 1984: Remastered / Van Halen:1984 was a successful record not only because it contained solid, catchy hard rock, but also because it incorporated synthesisers into the mix, the first metal album to do so to any serious extent. Although the advances in electronic music make this material sound dated now, it's still a highlight of Van Halen's career. Songs such as "Jump" contain a pop element that gave 1984 mainstream appeal, and David Lee Roth turned the frontman role into an art form on songs such as "Panama", "Hot for Teacher", "Drop Dead Legs" and "I'll Wait". To a large extent, it was 1984 that set the standard for 1980s pop metal, and David Lee Roth who set the standard (or takes the blame, depending on your point of view) for the aggressively good-time attitude most pop-metal bands took for their own. -Genevieve Williams.

Review Delilah / The Sensational Alex Harvey Band:With a seamless and unique blend of music hall, comic books and heavy rock, SAHB became a major UK live draw during the mid-70s. Led by the twinkling eye and imposing charismatic presence of their proudly Glaswegian frontman Alex Harvey, a 60s blues scene veteran, their singularly vaudevillian exploits and astoundingly dynamic cohesion of hitherto unrelated genres couldn't help but melt even the hardest of hearts. Delilah, named for their chart-busting cover of Tom Jones' finest hour, is a perfect introduction to the SAHB canon in that it judiciously collates a truly representative sprinkling of the band's finest recorded moments. From their strident take on Leiber and Stoller's "Framed", through the gorgeously bagpipe-drenched tear-jerkings of "Anthem", to the epic, proto-electro stylings of "Faith Healer", Delilah is a testament to pure genius. Alex Harvey tragically died in 1982, but his priceless legacy lingers on, so go on, sample a slice. -Ian Fortnam.

Review Adore / Smashing Pumpkins:With Adore, Smashing Pumpkins return to the forefront of rock to do a dance with a new partner. Trading white-noise vocals and guitars for caramel crooning and dense synthesizers, frontman Billy Corgan drives bandmates James Iha and D'Arcy to a lush aural plateau. The darkness is still there-evidenced in the techno throb of the single "Ava Adore"-but the Pumpkins also tinker with Lennonesque lullabies ("Behold! The Night Mare"), midtempo electronica ("Appels and Oranjes") and tender calliope music ("Once Upon a Time"). Smartly, Corgan rarely upstages the watery sounds going on behind him; the trademark mid-song blowouts are almost completely absent. Adore will strike your ears and heart in a way you didn't think the Smashing Pumpkins could. -Jason Josephes.

Review Mer De Noms / A Perfect Circle:Somewhere inside every alternative metal band lurks a platinum-selling stadium rock act looking for a way out; Perfect Circle appear intended to be Tool front man Maynard James Keenan's ticket to the big time. While Tool's uncompromising take on industrial goth metal have taken them so far, Keenan clearly dreams of bigger things: there are moments on Mer De Noms, notably "Rose", that are in meaningful danger of being confused with Jethro Tull and others, which call to mind the most wretched excesses of Whitesnake. Though there are plenty of worse metal albums out there, it is hard to imagine what conceivable use Mer De Noms will serve. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Kerrang 2 / Various Artists:Big tunes for big shorts-that's the basic theme of both volumes of Kerrang! The Album. Like Volume 1, Volume 2 is packed with more contemporary rock and metal anthems for the kids, and drawn from some of the scene's biggest names in 2001. And this compilation really seems to have the scene sussed: from the comic-book Goth of Marilyn Manson ("Disposable Teens") to the roadhouse rowdiness of Buckcherry ("Lit Up"), and from the geek rock of Weezer ("Hash Pipe") to the fratboy shoutiness of Limp Bizkit ("Rollin'"). The volume ranges from loud (Wheatus' "A Little Respect") to louder (Muse's "Plug In Baby") to loudest (Slipknot's "Wait and Bleed"), with neither time nor space for soppy ballads. The two CDs on Kerrang! The Album 2 should keep any angry young man or woman happily bouncing around the room for hours. -Ted Kord.
