Review Infest: UK Version / Papa Roach:

"What is wrong with the world today?" bellows frontman Coby Dick on Infest, Papa Roach's opening statement of intent. "The government, the media, or your family?" Welcome to the post-Millennial American rockscape, where every teen has his cross to bear and every band approaches the recording of an album with a whole head of demons to exorcise. And welcome, Papa Roach-not a band that comes to lay waste, more a band that studies the emotionally devastated fall-out once everything's been wasted. Infest is an album very much in the mould of Limp Bizkit's Significant Other-muscular, bruising rap-metal, dysfunctional two-fingers-to-the-world attitude-but where Limp Bizkit's anger manifests in Fred Durst's crotch-clutching braggadio, Papa Roach wear their issues with a sense of empathy. The likes of "Revenge" and "Broken Home" ("I know my mother loves me/ But does my father even care?") are pretty self-explanatory, but on "Last Resort"-a brutally simplistic study of a friend's suicide attempt-Papa Roach's brevity is their undeniable strength. Tell the parents-here's a rock band of positive male role-models, ready to bang the world to rights. -Louis Pattison.

Review Fallen / Evanescence:

Fallen, the debut album from Evanescence (a previously unknown quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas) was given a nice boost by the Daredevil soundtrack. Their songs "My Immortal" and the imposing "Bring Me to Life" are clear stand-outs in the film, mainly because they work so well with the dramatic, eerie undertones of the story line. They reappear here on the band's debut, alongside a selection of similarly brooding tracks that evoke pensive artists such as Tori Amos and the Cranberries. Vocalist Amy Lee has the kind of voice that can cause weeks of insomnia, but on songs such as "Tourniquet" and "Haunted" she belies the music's sinister mood with even-handed spirituality, thoughtfully letting some light shine through the tempest. -Aidin Vaziri.

Review Weathered / Creed:

Creed, the multi-platinum kings of MOR nu-metal, have gotten a bit more aggressive and intense-to fine effect-on some of Weathered's 11 stellar, radio-friendly tracks. For those who prefer the soft side of singer Scott Stapp and his cohorts, there are the melodic and soaring "Hide" and "Don't Stop Dancing". But more interesting are "Bullets", which finds Stapp raging before a surprisingly heavy and intense musical backdrop. Other highlights include the Seattle-sound throwback "Freedom Fighter", the Zeppelin-esque "Who's Got My Back" and "My Sacrifice". The effects-laden, passionate "Signs" contrasts nicely with the laid-back, world-weary title track and "Lullaby". Ultimately, Weathered gently expands the seemingly fail-proof formula. -Katherine Turman END.

Review Remasters / Led Zeppelin:

One of the few truly bigger-than-life rock bands, Led Zeppelin continues to cast a giant shadow over contemporary rock two decades after the group's break-up. The slickly packaged set offers a solid introduction to the band's work, with two discs of remastered, sonically upgraded album tracks, plus a third disc of interviews with surviving band members Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones. Hearing all these Zep classics-"Stairway to Heaven", "Whole Lotta Love", "Dazed and Confused", "Rock and Roll", "Kashmir", "Immigrant Song", "Black Dog" "Good Times Bad Times", "Heartbreaker", "Houses of the Holy" and "The Song Remains the Same"-assembled in one package is an impressive testament to the group's pervasive influence. -Scott Schinder.

Review The Colour and the Shape / Foo Fighters:

A major criticism of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut was its supposed lack of, you know, passion among the well-crafted songs and well-crafted rock. This time out, if it's wreckage you want, it's wreckage you get. The Colour and the Shape grows deeper the more it's played, with the band's ripping power more than matched by Dave Grohl's fascinating examinations of pain and divorce. There is even a convincing long slow ballad, "November Stars", whose intensity should win over doubters. If that doesn't work, then the screaming "My Hero" will. -Rickey Wright.

Review Howl / Black Rebel Motorcycle Club:

With a name like Howl, you'd expect the third album from San Francisco's Black Rebel Motorcycle Club to be their ugliest, heaviest statement yet. Think again. Kicking off with the spontaneous acoustic blues stomp of "Shuffle Your Feet", Howl starts as it means to go on: mellow, stoned, and sounding more authentically down-home than any band of sociopathic, narcosis-twisted punks have sounded since Primal Scream holed up in Memphis to write 1994's Give Out But Don't Give Up. "Still Suspicion Holds You Tight" and "Fault Line" crib from early Dylan, rolling drawled vocals, finger-picked guitar and blasts of harmonica into brittle sneers of malcontent, while the sleepy "Promise" offers up a spaced-out, Spiritualized-style ballad embellished with sweet piano and sleepy brass. Meanwhile, as the titles might suggest, "Restless Sinner" and "Gospel Song" reach back still further into the annals of traditional Americana. What happened to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's rock'n'roll? They haven't lost it altogether, but on Howl they've consciously devolved their sound, and this stripped, mostly enjoyable blues record is testament to the virtue of taking a leaf out of the old rulebook - Louis Pattison.

Review Stoosh: Limited Edition / Skunk Anansie:

If you were to judge this album just by its thrashy third track "Yes It's Fucking Political", you would miss out on the rich diversity of musical styles on this release. As highlighted on their first album, Paranoid & Sunburnt, the group have a tendency for being frank, explicit and often militant. However, as well as the hardcore rants, Stoosh also shows off the band's softer side, especially on bittersweet tracks like "Hedonism (Just Because You Feel Good)". Full of postmodern flourishes, the songs flitteringly deal with lifestyle politics, sung with equal parts rage and tenderness by their striking frontwoman, Skin. A phenomenal and mature sophomore effort, perfectly showcasing their now-trademark funk and metal sound. -John Galilee.
