Review Zeitgeist / Smashing Pumpkins:

With its provocative title (Zeitgeist, meaning `Spirit of the Times'), depiction of a sinking Statue of Liberty in front of a red, glowing sun on the cover, and song-titles like "Doomsday Clock", 7 Shades of Black" and "United States," you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to discern the themes and concerns of the new Smashing Pumpkins record. The first album to be released under the Smashing Pumpkins name since 2000, Zeitgeist is of special interest for those who thought that the Pumpkins game was all but finished. First single "Tarantula" showcases the sound of the new album: a heavy-ish, catchy slice of coruscating rock, it simultaneously harks back to the band's older, stadium-rock days (see Siamese Dream) while continuing the power pop poses of Corgan's recent (and now disbanded) Zwan project. While many songs - "7 Shades of Black," "Pomp & Circumstance," the intense, ten minute long "United States" - amply display the band's vigorous side, tracks like "That's the Way" offer slower, more lucid moments. There's nothing here to quite match the glories of yesteryear, but Zeitgeist does profile a band still capable of hitting the spot. -Danny McKenna.

Review Welcome to the Neighbourhood / Meat Loaf:

Note the track-listing: "I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)", "If This Is The Last Kiss (Let's Make It Last All Night)". Those titles alone would be enough to do an average singer in, let alone interpreting, emoting, living these songs as Mr Loaf is wont-in his inimitable way-to do. This successor to Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell, must confront the very same problem he faced years before, after the staggering success of the original: how to follow up a worldwide smash? How to avoid a nagging sense of the anti-climactic? Particularly given the absence, this time around, of songwriter and all-round svengali Jim Steinman. Admittedly, two of his cast-offs-"Original Sin" (from Paradise Lost) and "Left In The Dark" (from Bad For Good)-take up a little of the slack; otherwise, the void is filled by Diane Warren, power-ballad hitmaker for Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, et al. , whose penchant for orchestral flourishes, choral rhapsodies and wayward metaphors, exceeds even the master's. Preposterous, of course, but oddly hard to dislike. -Andrew McGuire.

Review Take To The Skies / Enter Shikari:

The debut album from St Albans quartet Enter Shikari is an impressive testament to one band's spirited self-reliance. Not only does Take To The Skies touch down on Shikari's own homegrown label, Ambush Reality, this is the sort of unlikely soundclash - hardcore punk meets glowstick-waving rave - that millions said wouldn't work, but when done right, very clearly does. Not everyone will get it, of course - you can almost hear the generation gap yawning as "Stand Your Ground; This Is Ancient Land" kicks in - a mix of drum'n'bass snares, trance keyboards, and growled profanity that should leave the older rockers scratching their heads. But like Lostprophets before them, Enter Shikari are clearly something far more than a kiddie fad. The likes of "Mothership" and "Anything Can Happen In The Next Half Hour" tremor with the sort of earthquake breakdowns and thrash riffs moshpits were made for, and where synthesisers fire up, they do so with a remarkable cohesiveness, adding a surprising, euphoric counterpoint to the barked metal aggression. As with Lostprophets, time will tell if Enter Shikari have the anthems to become part of the metal big leagues, but Take To The Skies is an impressive, energetic starting point. -Louis Pattison.

Review The Golden Age Of Grotesque / Marilyn Manson:

Marilyn Manson's The Golden Age of Grotesque was inspired, in part at least, by the seamy underside of Weimar Berlin, circa 1930. The album is constructed along the lines of Alice Cooper's 1975 gem, Welcome to My Nightmare, dipping in to the same cabaret of Cooper's "Some Folks. " Unlike Cooper, however, this is no comic nightmare. "This isn't a show / This is my fucking life / I'm not ashamed / You're entertained," Manson snarls in "Vodevil," making it abundantly clear that the singer was born in the wrong time and place and is more at home among the absinthe-drinking revellers in pre-Nazi Germany. The album possesses a dark, accessible beauty rather than the twisted industrial dissonance that pervades much of his earlier stuff. "mOBSCENE" is a thumping rocker that features a deranged cheerleading squad. "Ka-Boom Ka-Boom" is a rousing stomper that Manson penned in response to an exec's complaint that the new songs didn't rock. Its simple yet seditious chorus decries, "I like a big car, 'cause I'm a big star / I'll make a big rock & roll hit. " Since 1998's Mechanical Animals, Manson's albums have become progressively more tuneful, and Grotesque continues the trend. -Jaan Uhelszki.

Review The Best of Whitesnake / Whitesnake:

An album of two distinct halves, The Best of Whitesnake inevitably but annoyingly jumbles up honest, workmanlike tracks from the pre-1984 blues-rock outfit with transatlantic poodle-rock from a late-80s band that had the same name and same frontman but little in common musically with their previous incarnation. The only track from their first proper studio album Trouble is the subsequent live standard "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" and there's also just one cut from 1978's Lovehunter ("Long Way from Home"). Other highs include "Fool for Your Loving" (Ready an' Willing, 1980) and the sassy boogie of "Would I Lie to You" (Come an' Get It)-exactly what Whitesnake did best. Poodle-power-chord tracks to avoid include "Is This Love" from 1987 and "Now You're Gone" from 1989's even more dire Slip of the Tongue. Significantly, by the time of "Too Many Tears" from 1997's Restless Heart, Coverdale is nostalgically harking back to the band's blues roots: "All I'm asking is where did I go wrong?" he sings. Just listen to this album, David mate, and you'll find out. -Mark Walker.
