Review Maladroit / Weezer:With the release of Maladroit, just over 12 months after The Green Album, Weezer appear to be in the midst of a particularly fertile creative period. After taking five leisurely years to follow up on 1996's Pinkerton, the Los Angeles power-pop band is apparently on a roll. "Dope Nose", which is easily stronger than anything on the last album, flexes a sinister shout-along chorus and vintage Van Halen riffs, while the potent garage-punk blast of "Fall Together" wipes out any lingering discomfort over the thoroughly Sugar Ray-sounding "Island in the Sun" (which, incidentally, is included again on this album). In a sense The Green Album was just a taster for this, the blissfully thunderous main dish. Sure, there are some deadpan emo moments ("Death and Destruction") littering the course, but mostly Maladroit is Weezer doing what they do best-inverting and embracing dumb rock stereotypes and somehow making them sound smart. -Aidin Vaziri.

Review Sandinista / The Clash:What the hell is this? Though the two-record sprawl of London Calling- -with its exploratory mutations of reggae, rockabilly, and even disco-proved that the Clash weren't content to lie fallow in a punk-rock ghetto, nothing prepares you for Sandinista!'s messy melange. Spread over 36 tracks (the Clash originally released this as a three-record set for not much more than the price of one) the band tackles everything in sight, including waltz, gospel, disco, children's ditties, funk, reggae, dub, delicate instrumentals, psychedelic explorations-hell, they even play a Clash rocker or two. Though many have said there is a single great album hidden among the three here, it's the pure chutzpah of Sandinista! that makes it such a particular pleasure and a brain drain at the same time. It's the document of a band that can do anything and tries to do everything. It's the glorious sound of failure. And if that ain't the Clash, what is? -Tod Nelson.

Review Global a Go-Go / Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros:Global A Go-Go, Joe Strummer's second album with the The Mescaleros following 1999's Rock Art and The X-Ray Style mines the same concerns that have always inspired his music. "Johnny Appleseed" and "Cool 'n' Out" centre on Joe's brash eruptive guitar but hark back to his pre-punk folk busking roots, with lyrics anchored by a strong sense of indignation and social commitment. Strummer may pride himself as an original punk warlord, but he realises punk can only thrive by rejoicing in Britain's ever-vibrant multicultural melting pot as he does on "Bhindi Bagee" and the Arabic inflected refugee requiem "Shaktar Donetsk". His longstanding fascination with dub reggae fuels "At the Border, Guy", while the Marconi saluting title track celebrates the power of radio to present new worlds and unite communities. On "Mondo Bongo" he dispenses with his trademark bark for a lovely ballad laced with pre-Clash accomplice Tymon Dogg's lonesome violin. This is real anger with a big warm heart; maturity suits Strummer just fine. -Gavin Martin.
