Review J.S. Bach: Cantatas BWV 72; 73; 111; 156 / English Baroque Soloists John Eliot Gardiner:John Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir and the gut-strung English Baroque Soloists sound fresh and incisive on this Deutsche Grammophon CD of the four cantatas which Bach wrote for the third Sunday after Epiphany. The cantatas were performed and recorded live on that day in January 2000, early into the Bach Pilgrimage Tour. They had reached Milan, Italy, and were keen, new pilgrims not long into a journey. The gospel reading for Epiphany III depicts a similarly young, enthusiastic and wilful Jesus at the start of his mission. Lepers walk; the palsied revive; whatever Jesus wills, happens. Three of the cantatas begin with bracing choruses about divine will. "Allein nur nach Gottes Willen" opens the disc with a blaze of determined, rhythmic singing and playing. It is the finest track on the CD although the beautiful Sinfonia at the start of "Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe", an occasional encore piece, also makes it worth the purchase. The soloists have mixed fortunes. Soprano Joanne Lunn soars brightly-she has been the star of the tour. [+]
Contralto Sara Mingardo sounds edgy, tenor Julian Podger dry, and bass Stephen Varcoe, a last-minute replacement, sometimes trips on his ornaments. Audience applause has been wiped, which may be a mistake. -Rick Jones.

Review Satie: Piano Works / Naxos:The music on this album is drawn from the four volumes of the complete piano music of Erik Satie performed by the Hungarian pianist Klara Kormendi. Recorded at the Italian Institute in Budapest, the small acoustic is eminently suited to this intimate music, while Kormendi plays with considerable assurance, if lacking just a little of the fluid fantasy Satie really demands. Given that there are 36 pieces on the disc, it is clear that these are miniatures, and what elegantly crafted miniatures they are. Occupying a place in French piano music between the refined lyricism of Fauré and the spare impressionism of Debussy, these works have a beguiling gem-like perfection and lightness of touch. Satie, who studied with d'Indy and Roussel, sets out to charm with deceptively simple, ingenious compositions, often a subtle twinkle in his eye. His nonsensical titles and performance directions appear as a joking defence of a famously insecure man, uncertain of his standing besides Ravel and Stravinsky-who once described the composer as "the oddest person he had ever known"-but also the most "consistently witty". The composer's best-known pieces, the lovely three Gymnopédies, are beautifully presented, yet all the music here really has immense appeal. -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review Delius: Choral Works / Chandos:When this all-Delius disc was first released in 1993 as part of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's centenary celebrations, it took a Gramophone Award and for reasons that should be obvious even to listeners with no natural sympathy toward Delius. Sea Drift is the masterpiece of its composer but lives up (or rather down) to its title all too literally, with a loose ebb and flow of musical invention that barely satisfies the ear's demand for a defined shape. Like the Songs of Sunset and the later Songs of Farewell, it's awash with melancholic musing on the transience of life and certainty of death; and its salvation in performance is a sense of sustained forward movement without which the whole thing falls apart, as it often does. But not here, in the hands of a conductor who feeds constant, measured energy into the slow and sometimes dangerously somnolent progress of the writing. This is Richard Hickox in his element and at his best: entirely sympathetic to the idiom but with an equally clear sense of the disciplinary action required to make it work. With stunning solo contributions from a radiantly young Bryn Terfel and (in Songs of Sunset) Sally Burgess, this is the finest recording of the repertory. -Michael White.
