Review J.S. Bach: Cantatas BWV 72; 73; 111; 156 / English Baroque Soloists John Eliot Gardiner:John Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir and the gut-strung English Baroque Soloists sound fresh and incisive on this Deutsche Grammophon CD of the four cantatas which Bach wrote for the third Sunday after Epiphany. The cantatas were performed and recorded live on that day in January 2000, early into the Bach Pilgrimage Tour. They had reached Milan, Italy, and were keen, new pilgrims not long into a journey. The gospel reading for Epiphany III depicts a similarly young, enthusiastic and wilful Jesus at the start of his mission. Lepers walk; the palsied revive; whatever Jesus wills, happens. Three of the cantatas begin with bracing choruses about divine will. "Allein nur nach Gottes Willen" opens the disc with a blaze of determined, rhythmic singing and playing. It is the finest track on the CD although the beautiful Sinfonia at the start of "Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe", an occasional encore piece, also makes it worth the purchase. The soloists have mixed fortunes. Soprano Joanne Lunn soars brightly-she has been the star of the tour. [+]
Contralto Sara Mingardo sounds edgy, tenor Julian Podger dry, and bass Stephen Varcoe, a last-minute replacement, sometimes trips on his ornaments. Audience applause has been wiped, which may be a mistake. -Rick Jones.

Review Haydn: Seven Last Words (quartet version) / The Lindsays:The Seven Last Words is a one-off whose musical interest gives it more than just novelty status. Haydn wrote the work for orchestra in 1787, promptly arranging it for string quartet, piano, even chorus and orchestra. That the quartet version is the most-often played is no coincidence: it's the ideal medium for Haydn's musical depiction of Christ's alleged seven last "phrases"-seven pieces, all at an adagio tempo, preceded by a similarly marked introduction and concluded by a violent presto evoking the storm of God's wrath. Serious stuff, but thanks to Haydn's subtle changes in mood and gravitas, not the hard slog you might expect. The Lindsays have given many performances of the whole cycle, so they've no problems when it comes to sustaining interest in the work over its 50 minutes, or of unleashing the coda's massive pent-up energy. Its not hard when listening to foresee the profound, slow movements of Beethoven's late quartets, and beyond them to the symphonies of Bruckner and Mahler. Powerful music worth getting to know. -Richard Whitehouse.

Review Plácido Domingo - Sacred Songs / Plácido Domingo Orchestra Sinfonica e Coro di Milano Giuseppe Verdi Marcello Viotti Sissel:In February 2002, Plácido Domingo spent some time in the recording studio. The result is Sacred Songs, a 16-track disc of music which spans three centuries. There are a few favourites here, such as the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria and "Ombra mai fu" from Handel's opera Serse. But it's not all familiar-Sacred Songs has plenty of surprises too. The collection opens with an arrangement of the much loved Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana where Domingo is joined by the Norwegian soprano Sissel. She appears on one other track but her breathy voice is no match for the great tenor. Next up is a setting of the Kyrie by the Italian composer Paolo Rustichelli (b. 1953) which almost takes the disc into pop territory with its synthesizers and guitar solo. Plácido Domingo Jr turns up as the composer of another Ave Maria setting, preceded by his father's cringing rendition of "Climb Ev'ry Mountain". The Coro Sinfonico di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, which makes three appearances, is not on good form so the rendition of Franck's "Panis angelicus", where a cello replaces the chorus, is even more welcome. Review The Spanish Guitar / Naxos:You probably need to be a real guitar enthusiast to want the two-CD collection The Spanish Guitar, but anyone who fears that at more than 140 minutes this Naxos set may be a few plucky numbers too many should swiftly be won over. Where the set scores is in some clever programming that never allows the ear to tire of a particular sound-world or even a particular style. After the longest piece of the set, Mompou's beautiful Suite Compostelana, an orchestra broadens the aural world with Peter Breiner's concerto based on Bizet's Carmen. Three pieces fulfil a similar function on the second disc. Some of the best known Spanish "guitar" music was written for piano-Granados' 12 Spanish Dances; here we get the first, in an arrangement for guitar and orchestra, and the famous fifth, which tops and tails the set with a guitar transcription as an opener and a guitar and piano version as a finale. In between you can find everything from foot-stomping flamenco to moody languorous pieces, played with great atmosphere by a fine line-up of soloists. Listeners in need of persuasion need look no further than Norbert Kraft's playing of Tárrega's celebrated Recuerdos de la Alhambra, a cracking piece, beautifully played. -Keith Clarke.

Review Szymanowski: Stabat Mater; Litany to the Virgin Mary; Symphony No. 3 [Choral Works] / EMI:A triumph in every way, the sumptuous and giddily refined sound-world of the great Polish composer Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937) finds Sir Simon Rattle well and truly in his element. Even more crucially, all three performances radiate inspirational commitment allied to a genuinely exhilarating sense of new discovery. Completed in 1916, the Third Symphony or Song of the Night-a setting for tenor, chorus and orchestra of texts by a 13th-century mystical Persian poet-remains one of the most sheer, intoxicating creations in all music. By contrast, the masterly and awesome Stabat Mater of 1926 (which Szymanowski himself rated as "perhaps my most profound and concentrated work") wears an altogether more loftily serene air, and its piercingly beautiful closing movement (track 6) will haunt you for days. Both here and in the wonderful Litany to the Virgin Mary (1931-3) the Polish soprano Elzbieta Szmytka produces the most ravishing sounds. If you've ever been bitten by the Górecki bug, make a bee-line for this ravishing collection! EMI's fastidiously balanced sound is astoundingly realistic to match. -Andrew Achenbach.
