Review Lesley Garrett - I Will Wait for You / Lesley Garrett:All things come in threes. The tenors have already done it; now soprano Lesley Garrett manages a hat trick under her own steam-May 2000 sees the release of her new album, the publication of her autobiography, Notes from a Small Soprano and the screening of her latest series for BBC2. Not a diva in the traditional sense, Garrett is establishing herself as a kind of musical Michael Barrymore. A comfortable and generous host, she lets young Ramón Vargas shine alongside herself in "Parigi o cara" from La Traviata while Ladysmith Black Mambazo provides an interesting contrast to Garrett on the closing track. Undeniably, Garrett is happiest alone in front of the band, be it the BBC Concert or Grimethorpe Colliery. Among many seamless arrangements features a delightfully schmaltzy version of "La Vie en rose" and the beautiful new Karl Jenkins composition He wishes for the Clothes of Heaven. Her take on Handel's "Tornami a vagheggiar" is frank and confident though lacking in intimacy and ensemble play. "Bel raggio lusinghier" from Rossini's Semiramide is flawless but Cole Porter's "Night and Day" sure doesn't swing. Garrett takes her widening audience on a distinctly unrocky road. Making sure she won't have to wait too long for her next gold, she makes the noises we like to hear, and therein lies the secret of her success. [+]

Review Dowland: In Darkness Let Me Dwell / ECM New Series:The past cross-fertilises with the present on In Darkness Let Me Dwell, and the result is music-making of profound beauty. Tenor John Potter, a core member of the Hilliard Ensemble, here sets out to "reclaim" for today's audience the music of John Dowland. Even considering the Elizabethan penchant for melancholy, the saturnine Dowland stands out as an artist preoccupied with death and intimate with despair in all its varieties. Music-as against our postmodern antidepressants-was the perfect anodyne, to which Dowland devoted himself both as performer (he was a famous lutenist) and composer; with his collection Lachrimae ("Tears"), he produced one of the single greatest landmarks of Western instrumental music predating the high baroque, centring around the famous melody Dowland gave to his malady (also heard in the two versions here of the song "Flow My Tears"). In Darkness Let Me Dwell juxtaposes numbers from Lachrimae with some of Dowland's songs, in which Potter becomes so steeped in each mood that it tells in wonderfully plaintive phrasing. Dowland originally wrote for lute and a consort of viols, but it's typical of this disc's innovatory spirit to hybridise baroque violin and lute with a quasi-"jazzy" double-bass, saxophone, and bass clarinet, inspiring a high order of improvisatory gestures. Sometimes the whole ensemble takes on a gritty, darkly reedy cast, while it can change to sunnier colours in the more radiant moments of "Lachrimae Amantis". These performances highlight the songs' directness and universality, drawing you in deeper with each hearing, and replaying the eternal paradox of sadness turning to solace. -Thomas May.

Review Coronation Anthems / Decca:The Academy of Ancient Music and the Choir of New College Oxford join forces magnificently on this celebratory CD of 15 baroque coronation anthems. The tracklist runs in reverse order beginning with Boyce's music for George III, and continuing with Handel's for George II, Croft's for George I, Jeremiah Clarke's for Queen Anne, Blow's for William and Mary, and Purcell's for James II. The best-known work and the only one to have been retained for subsequent coronations is Handel's Zadok the Priest, which here gently pants through its suspense-filled introduction until the glorious full bloom of the choral entry complete with trumpets and drums. The boys sound in euphoric end-of-term voice. The men enjoy the romp. Handel's is the grand view of monarchy, splendidly regal, distant, proud and untouchable by the rejoicing crowds. Purcell's is a more private and personal view as expressed in the exquisite verse anthem My heart is inditing here performed with chamber delicacy. The trebles sing a strong, supplicating line in Blow's Let my prayer with the gentlemen a subtle backing. The orchestra glows throughout the disc and billows pneumatically in the opening Boyce anthem The King shall rejoice. This lacks the catchy invention of Handel's setting of the same words. [+]

Review The Typewriter - Leroy Anderson Favorites / Red Seal:Leroy Anderson's most famous piece is The Syncopated Clock. A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Anderson was one of those composers who new his limitations exactly, and never wrote beyond them. He was a master at orchestral miniatures: short, tuneful pieces of musical fluff-but very high-quality fluff. Anderson lavished as much attention on one of his miniatures as Wagner did on his monster operas. They are the musical equivalent of Fabergé eggs. Slatkin treats these little gems with the loving attention they deserve, and you'll be amazed by how many of the tunes jog your memory. A delight. -David Hurwitz.
