Review Classic FM: Time to Relax / Classic FM:Time to Relax is a three-CD box set from Classic FM which "contains music that has been specially chosen because of its calming and soothing influences". In other words, it is very much like listening to the radio station's Smooth Classics at Seven, but with all the non-calming commercials and talk edited out. There's great music here, though whether one approves of taking individual movements from works as fundamentally different as Bach's Double Violin Concerto in D minor and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and lumping them together as easy-listening background music is a matter of taste. What cannot be denied is that the performances are taken from high quality modern recordings on such leading labels as BMG, EMI, Conifer and Nimbus. Unlike many budget compilations, there are brief introductory notes for each piece and everything is properly credited, with such fine conductors as Nicholas Cleobury leading the Britten Sinfonia in Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on Greensleeves and Richard Hickox conducting the City of London Sinfonia in Finzi's gorgeous Eclogue for Piano and String Orchestra. In delivering more than three hours of gentle, melodic classical music Time to Relax provides exactly what it says on the box. -Gary S Dalkin.

Review Mozart - Flute and Harp, Clarinet Concertos; Flute Concerto No. 1 / EMI Classics:Emmanuel Pahud, who here delivers his version of Mozart's first flute concerto plus his earlier work for flute and harp, is in many ways James Galway's anointed successor. This young Swiss virtuoso followed Galway in the job of principal flute with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at the tender age of 22 after receiving encouragement from him. As the older flautist has diversified into non-classical territories, Pahud has taken his place as prime purveyor of the flute classics. He brings to Mozart's first concerto a tone of astonishing warmth and fullness-those who think the flute colourless should listen in here-and to its gorgeous slow movement an irresistible grace. And with harpist Marie Langlamet the double concerto springs vibrantly into life; the melodic patterns they weave round each other in the slow movement are all the more beautiful for being taken at a notably gentle pace. This version more than holds its own against the classic recording by Galway and Marisa Robles. Meanwhile clarinettist Sabine Meyer deals effectively with the concerto on which all clarinettists must sooner or later leave their mark. Claudio Abbado and the incomparable Berlin Phil underpin everything with their trademark warmth and clarity. -Michael Church.

Review Kronos Quartet: Nuevo / Nonesuch:To say that the Kronos Quartet's Nuevo is the ensemble's most adventurous outing to date is hardly an understatement. This diverse collection of Mexican compositions and traditional tunes brims with an unpredictable energy and a dazzling array of Latin American guest performers, and, yes, Kronos keeps up throughout. A cocktail pop tune from Esquivel is covered; there's a chamber arrangement of Revueltas' sprawling orchestral work Sensemaya, and Nortec Collective member Plankton Man remixes Kronos's interpretation of "El Sinaloense" into a sizzling dance music track which closes the disc. The playing is spirited, to say the least (check out "El Llorar", with guest vocalists Alejandro Flores and Efren Vargas). But this is foremost a party record. A bevy of reverb effects and instrumentation (including a squeaky musical leaf solo on "Perfidia") ensures that things stay unpredictable. Production work by Rock en Espanol producer Gustavo Santaolalla infuses this disc with an edgy modernism. The bulk of these compositions have been arranged by composer Osvaldo Golijov, who seemingly brings a manic energy and playfulness to everything he touches. Chamber music purists may scoff, but the rest of us will be busy dancing and thrilling to this exciting, genre-blurring Kronos project. -Jason Verlinde.
