Review Gerald Finzi - Violin Concerto / Tamsin Little:Gerald Finzi wrote his Violin Concerto in the mid-1920s for Sybil Eaton (a gifted young artist with whom he had become infatuated). In May 1927, Eaton played the second and third movements under Malcolm Sargent (Finzi having already rejected the opening movement), and when Vaughan Williams arranged another performance the following year, Finzi decided to have another stab at that problematic first movement. Still he was dissatisfied, and subsequently published the slow movement separately as his Op. 6 Introit. It's a hugely enjoyable creation, the bracingly, back-to-Bach vigour of its outer movements framing a central Molto sereno of limpid beauty. A lovely first recording, too, with Tasmin Little at her rapt best. The concerto is preceded by sensitively shaded readings of the wonderfully touching Romance and Prelude, and there's another debut on disc in the shape of In Years Defaced. Of the six songs that comprise the latter, only one ("When I Set Out for Lyonnesse") was actually orchestrated by Finzi, the remainder having been clothed in the most subtle garb by five contemporary composers including such luminaries as Colin Matthews, Judith Weir and Anthony Payne (of Elgar Three fame). Tenor John Mark Ainsley is as eloquent as one could wish, and the sound is excellent. -Andrew Achenbach.

Review Diáspora Sefardí / Alia Vox:Jordi Savall, Monterrat Figuras and Hespérion XXI pioneered the revival of early Spanish repertoire more than two decades ago, releasing classic recordings such as Secular Music from Christian and Jewish Spain. Their experience reaps tremendous dividends with the two-CD set Diáspora Sefardí. This is music of the Sefardim, the Spanish Jews exiled in 1492, but extends beyond the expected repertoire to include later music from those who settled as far away as Rhodes, Sofía and Sarajevo. The first disc is a programme of romances, Montserrat Figueras giving deeply impassioned performances pitched between heartrending elegy and searing eroticism. Compared to the cool perfection of the version by Florata on Magnificentia Iberica, El Rey de Fancia comes alive with an earthy engagement which rivets the attention, while an epic of betrayal, Nani, Nani, harnesses monumental emotional intensity. Throughout, the playing is superb, but inevitably the musicians really come into their own on the second CD, a set of instrumentals and improvisations, including the slow-burning rapture of Axerico. Here is 130 minutes of incredibly evocative, primal music with the potential to go way beyond the early music market and become a huge hit with followers of folk, world, jazz and perhaps even rock. Review Appalachian Spring (Bernstein) / Aaron Copland:Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented as Leonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versions since they were first issued-better even than the composer's own, later recordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to the extended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three great Copland ballets together, along with the ever popular Fanfare for the Common Man. Bernstein brings to this music the right sharpness of rhythm but also a typically open-hearted warmth. He coaxes a virtuoso response from the New York Philharmonic, which knows this music as well (or better) than anyone. Self- recommending. -David Hurwitz.
