Review Rachmaninov: The Bells / Russian National Orchestra Mikhail Pletnev Marina Mescheriakova Sergej Larin Vladimir Chernov The Moscow State Chamber Choir Vladimir Minin:

Rachmaninov allegedly considered The Bells to be his best work, and it is not difficult to hear why. Written in 1913, there is a freshness of invention that is irresistible. Perhaps the text (an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe) struck a chord with this composer's sensibilities: different bells symbolise different facets of existence. This piece deserves more frequent airing, and it is to be hoped that Pletnev and his Russian forces help raise awareness of this. The soloists are superb (Mescheriakova is particularly impressive), but the real star is the Moscow State Chamber Choir. This is a worthy companion to Pletnev's accounts of Rachmaninov orchestral works. Sergei Taneyev is a composer who should be more widely appreciated. Too often castigated in the textbooks for being overly academic, his works nevertheless demonstrate a freshness of invention which has immediate appeal. The cantata John of Damascus is something of a find. The Russian National Orchestra creates a superbly chilly atmosphere in the first movement, and once again the choir triumphs with fervent singing which conveys real belief in the quality of this music. The Bells ranks as a fine modern performance, but it is the Taneyev which might prove most fascinating. -Colin Clarke.

Review Bach: Ascension Cantatas BWV 11, 37, 43 & 128 / English Baroque Soloists John Eliot Gardiner:

John Eliot Gardiner's original Millennium Bach Cantata Pilgrimage plan intended weekly Deutsche Grammophon recordings of all the concerts; unfortunately this did not prove practical. This CD of Bach's Ascension Day cantatas dates from 1993 and 1999. The pride of the disc is BWV11: the opening chorus is an adrenalin-fix of blazing, suitably ascending motifs led by studio-immaculate baroque trumpets. Thereafter the mood changes. The alto aria "Ach bleibe" (actually the great Agnus Dei from the B Minor Mass) is, in countertenor Michael Chance's silky throat (1993 model), a poignant drooping song of sorrow for the departed Lord. Chance's 1993 fellow soloists are Nancy Argenta, Anthony Rolfe Johnson and Stephen Varcoe. They sing BWV43 Gott fähret auf and BWV37 Wer da gläubet with clear enjoyment. Argenta also sings in the 1999 session for BWV128, Auf Christi Himmelfahrt with colleagues Robin Blaze, Stefan Genz and Reinhard Hagen. The latter has a low F sharp that is truly bearded. -Rick Jones.

Review Shostakovich: Piano Concertos / Cfp:

The First Concerto can live or die by its own parody. Overplay it, and it's about as funny as bad slapstick, treat it straight and it's mesmerising in its black humour, always within a hair's-breadth of crossing the line into sheer insanity. Dmitri Alexeev is a gruff but never harsh soloist, the trumpet-playing of Philip Jones apparently effortless, the ECO sounding anything but English (a tribute to their conductor). The Second Concerto is, on the surface at least, a far more amiable animal, though with Shostakovich things are never quite as simple as they seem. The second movement contains one of his best melodies, a veritable love-song, which Alexeev plays simply and affectingly. As a bonus, you get the Assault On Beautiful Gorky. Written for a patriotic film, it's a stylistic flashback to the romanticism of Tchaikovsky and Miaskovsky. And, as if any further incentive were needed, the disc comes at budget price. -Harriet Smith.
