Review Bach: Christmas Oratorio / Erato:

Like that of the Easter and Ascension oratorios, the music of the Christmas Oratorio was compiled mainly from Bach's secular cantatas. That said, individual texts and scores were also considerably reworked for the composer to come up with a densely argued and pristinely shaped structure which assumes the form of a six-part arch, taking the Nativity story from Birth, via Annunciation, Adoration, Circumcision and Naming to the Coming of the Magi and their eventual climactic Adoration. Reciprocally well argued and formed is Tom Koopman's fastidious reading with his own well-drilled Baroque Orchestra and Choir. From a festive and rustic opening onwards-trumpets and timpani bristling with energy and attack-Koopman rightly treats the oratorio as a journey of discovery. And what lavish treats lie in store along the way, not in the least the immaculate contributions of all four vocal soloists, especially the velvety alto of Elisabeth von Magnus and the rich bass of Klaus Mertens. Propulsive tempi assist in keeping both the drama and the momentum going, and there's some sharp split-second editing to ensure that recitatives, arias and choruses really flow. Add the pristine playing of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, plus fine recording balance between them, soloists and choir for a thrilling and first-rate rendition. -Duncan Hadfield.

Review The Three Tenors (1994) / Teldec:

It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. It's all of these and none of them. Once you accept the fact that this sequel to the original blockbuster concert recording is less about music and more about entertainment and the power of musical personalities, you can appreciate what you're hearing as an event-phenomenal and bizarre, momentous and frivolous. This is an occasion to celebrate the voices and egos of three huge superstars and to have fun listening as Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras interact, bouncing lines off each other and playing to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience. Much of the fun and flavour of the concert is dependent on seeing the action, though, and without the visuals you notice flaws in the singing much more. Domingo comes off as the more solid performer and his voice is in far better shape than the other two. But if you crave big, high and loud-and you don't take your opera too seriously-you'll love this disc. -David Vernier It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. Review Brahms: Piano Concertos Nos.1 & 2 / Maurizio Pollini Berliner Philharmoniker Claudio Abbado:

The piano concerto was no bravura lollipop to Brahms, who elevated concertos almost to the status of symphonies. But his two piano concertos are certainly not lacking in drama or virtuosity and they are given with edge-of-the-seat vitality here by two of music's giants-or three if you count the orchestra, the mighty Berlin Philharmonic, playing superbly. Perhaps the immediacy of the readings is heightened by the fact that both recordings are taken from live performances: the first concerto in the Vienna Musikverein in 1997 and the second in the Berlin Philharmonie in 1995. And if live performances conjures up thoughts of audiences making unsolicited contributions, don't worry. Either the Austrian and German audiences were particularly well behaved or the DG engineers have done miracles, because there is not so much as a single hand-clap, let alone any coughing and spluttering. As two Italians, Abbado and Pollini can be expected to turn in spirited performances, which they certainly do. But these are also thoughtful readings that will long outlive the appeal of more showy interpretations. -Keith Clarke.

Review Chopin - Etudes / Sony Classical:

Through channelling his intelligent virtuosity toward musical ends, Murray Perahia reveals the distinctive voice of each Chopin Étude, rather than imposing a "one style fits all" aesthetic upon the music. His easy mastery of the right-hand double-note challenges of Op. 10 No. 7 and Op. 25 Nos. 6 & 8 and the taxing rotary patterns of the famous "Black Key" and "Winter Wind" études enable him to clarify their significant left-hand component. Note, too, the "Octave" étude's long-lined ebb and flow, or a sharper, more aggressive C-sharp Minor, Op. 10 No. 4, than the one Perahia recorded in the early 1990s. But his unusually brisk take on the E-flat minor (Op. [+]
10 No. 6) trivialises the music's aching harmonic tension, and the two C Minor Études (including the "Revolutionary") are a shade inhibited compared with the unbridled bravura of the versions by György Cziffra (Philips) and Juana Zayas (Music & Arts). These quibbles, however, should not prevent piano lovers from experiencing Perahia's well-considered and superbly engineered interpretations of the oft-recorded masterpieces. -Jed Distler.
