Review Brahms: Violin Concerto / Double Concerto / Gil Shaham Jian Wang Berliner Philharmoniker Claudio Abbado:The final flurry of recordings by Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic before formally parting company in summer 2002, includes this impressive tribute to Brahms and the violinist Joseph Joachim made at the Philharmonie Berlin in May 2000. The Violin Concerto in D and the Double Concerto in A minor were both composed for Joachim who is incarnate here in the steely, finely economical tone of fiddler Gil Shaham. His powerful first-movement certainties are tinged with timid introspection in the beautiful adagio, but burst into urgent exuberance in the finale. Naturally he plays Joachim's first-movement cadenza and does so with polished ease, clearly demonstrating the fruitfulness of the composer's and dedicatee's relationship. Shaham is joined by cellist Jian Wang for the Double Concerto. Their intercourse veers between loving reciprocity and sparring antagonism, as did Joachim's with his wife who divorced him and with Brahms who censured him. Dramatic, volatile tension drives the first movement like a threatening family row. Abbado steers the wrestling like a manipulative referee, cajoling the orchestra into a ringside crowd. The thoughtful slow movement moves like an agile heavyweight while the thrilling four-round rondo finale begins with tentative jabs before a tutti onslaught of syncopated blows and grinding interspersed themes makes of it a canvas-pounding knockout that calls for an immediate replay. -Rick Jones.

Review Tchaikovsky: 1812 Festival Overture, Op.49; Capriccio Italien / Beethoven: Wellington's Victory / University Of Minnesota Brass Band Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra Antal Doráti:This disc caused quite a stir when first issued in the early 1960s. With a panoply of infantry in the Beethoven, and bells and cannon in the Tchaikovsky, Dorati goes for maximum impact: just what both pieces need when heard outside the concert hall or arena. Wellington's Victory has often been labelled Beethoven's worst major work-pointlessly if you consider it was written as a quick commission for a new line of mechanical instrument! Take it with a fair pinch of salt and enjoy. 1812 is a better work than many people, including Tchaikovsky, would give it credit for. Again, it's not profound, nor was it meant to be. It sounds fabulous in this latest transfer-40 years just melt away as you listen. The Minneapolis SO is not in the "super league" of US orchestras, but they rise to the occasion as Dorati encourages them to do. You also get a hard and fast Capriccio Italen, and two discussions on how the sessions for the main works were set up. As the results amply demonstrate, it's a slice of recording history to treasure. -Richard Whitehouse.

Review The Beautiful Voice / Renée Fleming English Chamber Orchestra Jeffrey Tate:Soprano Renée Fleming is unquestionably one of the outstanding artists of our time, and she does indeed have a beautiful voice. It is well and interestingly displayed in this decidedly eclectic collection. That eclecticism may prove a problem for some listeners; Ms. Fleming's singing is the only motif the album could be said to have. There are assorted arias by assorted composers, a brief chunk of Orff's Carmina Burana, one lone number from Canteloube's Songs of the Auvergne, a bit of operetta, Rachmaninoff's Vocalise, and a single song by Richard Strauss. Thematically it's a jumble, but it's all exquisitely performed. -Sarah Bryan Miller.

Review Seven: a Suite for Orchestra / Naxos:Seven: A Suite for Orchestra marks both a departure and a homecoming for Tony Banks, best known as the keyboard player with Genesis. Since a brief sojourn in film music, notably with The Wicked Lady (1983), Banks has produced here his first orchestral work in 20 years. It may be his debut classical recording, but it also marks a return to the ambition behind the progressive rock of Genesis, where his classically inspired piano solos and intricate melodies elevated the band far above regular rock & roll. Now Banks has crafted a seven-movement symphonic suite, his lyrical piano entwined with the orchestra rather than showcased concerto-style. The piece lies firmly within the pastoral English tradition of Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Gerald Finzi, the lush orchestration (by Simon Hale) often infused with melancholy and soaring with a haunted intensity. Classical purists may dismiss Seven as pseudo-film music-indeed, the suite's third movement, "The Gateway", was written as a potential film theme and is gorgeously bittersweet and uplifting somewhat in the manner of John Williams's finale to ET (1982)-but those who just enjoy melodic orchestral music will find much to savour. The road from prog rock to symphonic score is littered with pretentious disasters, but Banks has wisely learnt from his predecessors' mistakes to make perhaps the most convincing transition so far. -Gary S Dalkin.
