Review Bax - Complete Symphonies / BBC Philharmonic Orchestra:This five-CD set includes all seven symphonies by Arnold Bax (1883-1953), the familiar tone poem Tintagel, and the Rogue's Comedy Overture in its premier recording. It also features Vernon Handley in two interviews-one with Lewis Foreman in the booklet, one with Andrew McGregor on the final disc. However, it's probably advisable to listen to it first, since Handley, one of Bax's most dedicated champions, has many illuminating things to say. Bax called himself "a brazen romantic. my music is the expression of emotional states". The symphonies, written between 1921 and 1939, certainly reflect both inner and outer events: the Irish uprising, which deeply affected Bax who loved Ireland and lost many friends in the "troubles", World War I and the looming threat of World War II. Perhaps the most striking and pervasive characteristic of the music is contrast. [+]All the symphonies have three movements divided into many sections with different tempo indications, signalling changing mood and character. Indeed, moods change constantly, often abruptly and violently; dynamics surge and swell, climaxes build with increasingly ferocious power. The orchestration is masterful, creating colour, texture, atmosphere and expression-at full throttle, the sound shakes the rafters. The music is predominantly serious, somber and dark with outbursts of passion, turbulence, bitterness and anger, relieved by unexpectedly rambunctious and martial sections. Every symphony opens on low instruments, setting a dark, ominous mood, but several end with a triumphant flourish, while others fade away with an Epilogue in serenity or resignation. No. 7 is regarded as Bax's compositional farewell, No. 4 as "cheerful and blustery. " The form is sometimes cyclical, with opening material returning in another guise, which, for the naked ear, is difficult to discern. Most memorable are the truly beautiful, luxuriously lyrical melodies that abound especially in the slow movements. The playing is first-rate throughout. -Edith Eisler, Amazon. com.

Review The British Music Collection: William Boyce - Symphonies / The Academy of Ancient Music Christopher Hogwood:William Boyce's collection of Eight Symphonies was published in 1760, though all save one were actually composed as overtures between 1739 and 1756. Until recently, Boyce's posthumous reputation rested on his church music and choral anthems such as Heart of Oak, but in his day he was also active in the London theatre world and these "Symphonys" are representative examples of the vogue for Italianate sinfonias (three movements: fast-slow-fast) and French overtures (a slow introduction-fugue-one or more dance movements). Like many other capable British composers, Boyce was ultimately overshadowed by the commanding presence of Handel, and it is thanks in no small part to the period-instrument movement that the considerable charms of his instrumental output are now better appreciated. Melodious, light of texture and enlivened with sprightly gavottes, minuets and jigs, these works need the sympathetic advocacy of groups such as Christopher Hogwood's Academy of Ancient Music to bring them back to life. Like Trevor Pinnock before him, Hogwood grasps the music's innate gracefulness: both versions match tempos almost exactly throughout, but Hogwood's rhythmic precision allows more space to appreciate the instrumental textures, while his substitution of organ for harpsichord in places give the continuo more variety. Both recordings of this delightful music, however, are self-recommending. -Mark Walker.

Review Shine (Original Soundtrack) / David Helfgott:A film about classical music and mental illness would normally be a box-office disaster. Yet such was the life-affirming brilliance of director Scott Hicks Shine, the true story of Australian pianist David Helfgott's battle against mental breakdown and his self-expression through Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3, that the film found an adoring audience. Composer David Hirschfelder faced the extraordinarily difficult task of crafting a score of sufficient maturity to stand beside some of the greatest classical masterpieces ever written. Had he failed the film itself could not have worked, yet work it did, and triumphantly so. This soundtrack album features 34 tracks, 14 by Hirschfelder, the remainder bring his arrangements of the classical selections used in the film. Necessarily, the resulting album is somewhat diverse and even fragmented. Despite this, Hirschfelder has done a remarkable job of assembling the pieces into a musical tapestry, in which his own delicately understated compositions sit comfortably besides Vivaldi, Beethoven and, of course, Rachmaninov, with David Helfgott himself playing on many of the tracks. Shine made the actor Geoffrey Rush an overnight star, going on to roles in Shakespeare in Love and Elizabeth-the latter eliciting another fine score from Hirschfelder. -Gary S. [+]Dalkin.

Review Mysterium - Sacred Arias / Angela Gheorghiu London Philharmonic Orchestra Ion Marin:One of the mysteries of Angela Gheorghiu's Mysterium is why it has taken so long to come out-it was recorded in September 1998. But for Gheorghiu fans it will be worth the wait. The Romanian soprano's warmly rounded voice, with its phenomenal control in pianissimo passages, is shown to great advantage in the opening four Romanian songs, so redolent of the Orthodox church you can almost smell the incense and candle wax. It would be good to see more of this repertoire making its way onto disc. Beyond these Romanian songs the other 11 numbers are Gheorghiu's choice, a personal collection of sacred arias, and if Brahms' "Lullaby" and Mendelssohn's "On Wings of Song" are not altogether sacred, they sit happily enough with the likes of the "Pie Jesu" from Fauré's Requiem and Schubert's "Ave Maria". Not every track is a coconut, and operatic sopranos rarely add much to "O Come, All Ye Faithful", but turn back to those first four songs and you know why you need the disc. Ghiorghiu is accompanied by a superbly drilled Romanian National Chamber Choir and the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Ion Marin. -Keith Clarke.
