Review Monteverdi: Vespers / Double Decca:

One of the most grand and eloquent liturgical works ever written, Monteverdi's Vespers has enjoyed near-perpetual favour with performers and listeners since its composition in 1610. It may have been written for use as an "audition" piece for the position of maestro di cappella at the famed St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. Whatever its motivation, this is a most ambitious and stylistically fascinating compendium that sets out the eight chants of the Mass Ordinary, interspersed with four motets and an instrumental piece. The 90-minute work includes soloists, chorus, and orchestra. Not until Bach would there be a religious work on this scale. Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir adopt a decidedly "un-period" sound on this mid-1970s recording, with free vocal vibrato and a mix of modern and period instruments. This two-for-one disc set also includes motets by Monteverdi, Gabrieli, and Bassani. -David Vernier.

Review SCHUMANN: Piano Works: Wilhelm Kempff / Wilhelm Kempff:

Wilhelm Kempff believed Schumann's composition suffered as his madness encroached, and he did not therefore play all his works, but this four-CD set, Piano Works, feels admirably comprehensive. Dating from this German master's later period-he went on playing until he was 85-it is as majestic a testament to his genius as the Beethoven sonatas which he recorded three times during his life. Kempff, born in 1895, had a direct link with the Romantic era: he studied with Busoni, and his principal teacher, Barth, had studied with Bulow-who was married to the daughter of Liszt. For Kempff, a recording was "a little piece of eternal life" and the record-player "a mirror for the ear": no pianist ever took the process more seriously. Which is one reason why this box is so treasurable. His hallmark is a glowing cantabile-no doubt attributable to the fact that he began his career as a cathedral organist-and he seems blissfully unbothered about virtuoso point-scoring. The Études symphoniques open with passionate languor; Kreisleriana are full of charm; and the Humoreske-which he waited decades to be ready to play-are intensely vivid. -Michael Church.

Review Vangelis: Mythodea (Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey) / Sony Classical:

An avatar of orchestral synthesis for 30 years, Vangelis has only now made his full orchestral outing with the ambitious and epic Mythodea. Currently linked as theme music for NASA's Mission to Mars program, Mythodea dates back to 1993 when Vangelis premiered the work in a live performance. After the amorphous synthesiser opening, Vangelis is little heard, using his keyboards only to support the large orchestra, 100-voice mixed choir, massed timpani, and the twin soprano leads of Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman. Echoes of Gustav Holst, Gustav Mahler and Carl Orff suffuse Mythodea with its stentorian choirs, rumbling percussion and dense string writing. Singing a hybrid language, Norman and Battle spiral through Vangelis's evocation of an ancient Greek landscape. By turns smothering and grandiose and often turgid, Mythodea is nevertheless studded with memorable themes, notably "Movement 9". It's a poignant, haunting melody, with the sopranos looping back and forth in ascending arcs, recalling Delibes's aria from Lakmé, better known as the British Airways theme. This is the Vangelis of L'Enfant and Heaven and Hell, where the composer's true voice is heard. -John Diliberto.

Review Mysterium - Sacred Arias / Angela Gheorghiu London Philharmonic Orchestra Ion Marin:

One of the mysteries of Angela Gheorghiu's Mysterium is why it has taken so long to come out-it was recorded in September 1998. But for Gheorghiu fans it will be worth the wait. The Romanian soprano's warmly rounded voice, with its phenomenal control in pianissimo passages, is shown to great advantage in the opening four Romanian songs, so redolent of the Orthodox church you can almost smell the incense and candle wax. It would be good to see more of this repertoire making its way onto disc. Beyond these Romanian songs the other 11 numbers are Gheorghiu's choice, a personal collection of sacred arias, and if Brahms' "Lullaby" and Mendelssohn's "On Wings of Song" are not altogether sacred, they sit happily enough with the likes of the "Pie Jesu" from Fauré's Requiem and Schubert's "Ave Maria". Not every track is a coconut, and operatic sopranos rarely add much to "O Come, All Ye Faithful", but turn back to those first four songs and you know why you need the disc. Ghiorghiu is accompanied by a superbly drilled Romanian National Chamber Choir and the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Ion Marin. -Keith Clarke.
