Review Gregorian Moods - Monks and Choirboys of Downside Abbey / Virgin Records:

This second release from the assembled musical forces of Bath's Downside Abbey and school follows in the admirable footsteps of their previous collection, The Abbey' The first thing that should be pointed out is the slight deception of this album's title. The opening track is Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine. There follows, spread throughout the 19 tracks, pieces by Bruckner, Elgar, Mozart and Brahms, all admirable composers following, in these musical instances, the religious tradition laid down by Gregorian chant but hardly monkish characters of the mediaeval period. The pieces included, sounding especially sensuous and dynamic thanks to their context are all, naturally, beautifully performed, the recording making the most of the Abbey's lush acoustic and the softly luxurious tones of the Boys' choir. The Gregorian chant fares slightly less well than in their previous recording, the mass of voices occasionally getting lost and smudged in the Abbey's cavernous sonic space, the stark melodies softened by the more modern sound of an organ. Despite this, Gregorian Moods is a fine disc, more of an exploration of the Gregorian tradition as part of the musical life of contemporary churches and Abbeys than a venture into the past. -Robert Heller.

Berlioz was the first Romantic master of the orchestra. His music hasn't been surpassed in terms of sheer brilliance and accuracy of effect. This set includes all of the overtures, the Symphonie fantastique, Harold in Italy, the Royal Hunt and Storm from Les Troyens, orchestral music from The Damnation of Faust and Romeo and Juliet, and the completely insane Grande Symphonie funebre et triumphale. Davis achieved his reputation as a conductor as a Berlioz specialist, and he proves an expert advocate on behalf of this stimulating, bizarre and totally original genius. Review Gerald Finzi / Various Artists:

Issued for the Finzi centenary in summer 2001, Gerald Finzi is a compilation set in Decca's British Music Collection series and designed to give an overview of the composer's choral/vocal music-which it does, with mixed results. The tracks are nearly all reissues, some of them approaching vintage status but including two extremely fine accounts by Richard Hickox of the ceremonial cantata "For St Cecilia" and the orchestral song cycle "Dies Natalis" (with a youthfully impassioned Philip Langridge). Representing Finzi's songs with piano are Bryn Terfel's handsome reading of the cycle "Let Us Garlands Bring" and a classic Benjamin Luxon recording of "Earth, Air and Rain", originally issued on Argo in the mid-1970s and hard to track down in recent years. But the major choral setting "Intimations of Immortality", which you would expect to find here, isn't. And although the lesser-known "In Terra Pax" is magical and in itself a worthy substitute, the performance selected is a thin one (with decidedly weak soloists) by Winchester Cathedral Choir. The Hickox version would have been a better choice but never mind. There's quite enough on these CDS to recommend them at mid-price. -Michael White.

Review Verdi: Macbeth / The Originals:

Everyone who hears it loves this recording of Verdi's early masterpiece. Small wonder. A first-rate ensemble from La Scala triumphantly charge through the murderous tale with unbounded confidence after a long-running production, and with a gut feeling for the true Verdian character and spirit. For Verdi himself, Macbeth was a hard birth. Struggling to revise shoddy rehearsal practice in a complacent mid-19th-century opera industry, he conducted long nightmarish rehearsals enforcing attention to his demands for strong stage characters. An indication of Verdi's success, and of the importance of his characterisation, is that Shirley Verrett, although audibly stretched in the higher register, still reigns as the ultimate Lady M. As in Shakespeare's original, the intense and tangible plight of the female part nearly outshines that of the principal anti-hero (Capucilli). With Lady Macbeth Verdi created his first real female star role of which he was to supply so many. Abbado is a master in observing detail and from both orchestra and soloists gets glittering performances and discipline in one go. Being cautious with his tempi, the conductor achieves deserved climaxes and a chillingly effective eerie throughline. [+]

Review Luminosa / Libera:

Luminosa is the follow-up to London boys' vocal group Libera's popular 1999 eponymous debut. That album made the pop charts and found the group-they prefer to be called a real boy band rather than a choir-on television with Lesley Garrett. Of the 12 new tracks, half are arrangements of familiar classical melodies. Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals is represented by a mysterious reinterpretation of "Aquarium", rather than "The Swan" suggested by the cover. Of the remaining pieces one is an arrangement of the traditional "Gaudete", and five are new compositions by Libera's director, Robert Prizeman. His "Silencium", a setting of Walter de la Mare's "All That's Past", has the haunting calm of Enya, while "Sabat" carries the boys' voices to the top of their range to ghostly effect. Drawing on the entire classical tradition, from the plainsong of "Veni Sancte" to a decidedly incongruous remake of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, Prizeman weaves a New Age tapestry from beautiful young voices and polished production techniques. Classical purists will be aghast at Handel and Debussy sharing space with digital sound sculpting, which leaves Luminosa free to find a home as easily accessible, superior background music. -Gary S Dalkin.
