Review Ravel: Piano Concertos; Valses nobles et sentimentales / Krystian Zimerman The Cleveland Orchestra London Symphony Orchestra Pierre Boulez:Fabulous pianism from Krystian Zimerman, scintillating in its poise, sparkle and wit, but with never a hint of self-regarding flashiness along the way. In the sublime slow movement of the G major concerto, Zimerman's songful liquidity comes close to the ideal (no-one has yet matched Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's miraculous 1959 EMI account), and Pierre Boulez and the Cleveland Orchestra could not be more sympathetic collaborators. For the Left-hand Concerto, we move from Ohio to Watford and a rather more expansive acoustic. If the London Symphony Orchestra don't always quite match their American counterparts in tasteful refinement and dazzling co-ordination, the detail in Ravel's breathtakingly imaginative orchestral canvas is now fractionally clearer. Again, Zimerman and Boulez forge an imperious alliance, this music's unsettling seam of desperation and terror quarried with comprehensive insight. Sandwiched between the two main courses come the Valses nobles et sentimentales: featuring the Clevelanders again on lustrous form, these are amongst the most bracing and intoxicating of recent times. As for the concertos, you need really look no further than Zimerman and Boulez: they're a class act. -Andrew Achenbach.

Review Classical Chillout / Virgin TV:The only thing wrong with this compilation is the title: "Chillout" hardly seems the right word to describe such a well-balanced collection which, while it includes such relaxing music as Debussy's Clair de lune and Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending, also has pieces as wired as Steve Reich's exciting Nagoya Marimbas and Simon Jeffes' Perpetuum Mobile. All the performances are good and have been juxtaposed with some wit: a piece which celebrates nocturnal luminescence, Clair de lune, is followed by a work traditionally performed in darkness, Allegri's Miserere. The aria "Ebbenne andrò lontana" (used in the film Diva) in which a woman reveals that she is going to live on the freezing summit of a mountain, is followed by the slow movement of Vivaldi's "Winter". There are no notes, translations or blurbs, so if you want to find out more about a piece you'll have to pull out the encyclopaedia or get on the net. But that aside, this is a thoroughly enjoyable compilation. -Warwick Thompson.

Review Seven: a Suite for Orchestra / Naxos:Seven: A Suite for Orchestra marks both a departure and a homecoming for Tony Banks, best known as the keyboard player with Genesis. Since a brief sojourn in film music, notably with The Wicked Lady (1983), Banks has produced here his first orchestral work in 20 years. It may be his debut classical recording, but it also marks a return to the ambition behind the progressive rock of Genesis, where his classically inspired piano solos and intricate melodies elevated the band far above regular rock & roll. Now Banks has crafted a seven-movement symphonic suite, his lyrical piano entwined with the orchestra rather than showcased concerto-style. The piece lies firmly within the pastoral English tradition of Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Gerald Finzi, the lush orchestration (by Simon Hale) often infused with melancholy and soaring with a haunted intensity. Classical purists may dismiss Seven as pseudo-film music-indeed, the suite's third movement, "The Gateway", was written as a potential film theme and is gorgeously bittersweet and uplifting somewhat in the manner of John Williams's finale to ET (1982)-but those who just enjoy melodic orchestral music will find much to savour. The road from prog rock to symphonic score is littered with pretentious disasters, but Banks has wisely learnt from his predecessors' mistakes to make perhaps the most convincing transition so far. -Gary S Dalkin.

Review Classic FM: Time to Relax / Classic FM:Time to Relax is a three-CD box set from Classic FM which "contains music that has been specially chosen because of its calming and soothing influences". In other words, it is very much like listening to the radio station's Smooth Classics at Seven, but with all the non-calming commercials and talk edited out. There's great music here, though whether one approves of taking individual movements from works as fundamentally different as Bach's Double Violin Concerto in D minor and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and lumping them together as easy-listening background music is a matter of taste. What cannot be denied is that the performances are taken from high quality modern recordings on such leading labels as BMG, EMI, Conifer and Nimbus. Unlike many budget compilations, there are brief introductory notes for each piece and everything is properly credited, with such fine conductors as Nicholas Cleobury leading the Britten Sinfonia in Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on Greensleeves and Richard Hickox conducting the City of London Sinfonia in Finzi's gorgeous Eclogue for Piano and String Orchestra. In delivering more than three hours of gentle, melodic classical music Time to Relax provides exactly what it says on the box. -Gary S Dalkin.

Review Shostakovich: The Jazz Album / Riccardo Chailly:Riccardo Chailly has proved himself adept in the highways and byways of Shostakovich's output. You really feel he enjoys this music, conducting it with relish and not a hint of condescension. Admittedly the Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings has real pathos in its second movement to offset the brittle humour and high jinx elsewhere. Ronald Brautigam brings a Gershwin-like uninhibitedness to his performance, with Peter Masseurs incisive yet elegant in the trumpet part. The two jazz suites are peripheral Shostakovich, but great fun all the same. The Concertgebouw's resident jazzers would clearly give any professional combo a run for its money, especially in the lengthy Second Suite, assembled from film and theatre scores. Tahiti Trot is even more intriguing than it sounds: an orchestral transcription of the 1920s hit "Tea For Two", made in a matter of hours to win a bet. Its a far cry from Shostakovich as we tend to think of him, yet valuable for throwing light on the heady era out of which the mature composer forcibly emerged. -Richard Whitehouse.

Review Chopin - Piano Works / Deutsche Grammophon:Born in Chongqing 19 years before he made this Chopin recording, Yundi Li is too old to qualify as a prodigy, and he's absurdly young to be labelled a "great master", but that's indubitably what he is. He has all the poetry and authority of Evgeny Kissin, but no whiff of that Russian's aggressive self-projection. When he won the Warsaw Competition at 18, he announced that he wanted to become "the next Zimerman", but the real Zimerman turned down his request to study with him, saying there was nothing more he could teach him. This CD demonstrates the point to perfection: the only flaw one might detect-over-pedalling in a Nocturne-proves to be a carefully calculated effect in one of a series of gorgeously fresh renderings of hackneyed favourites. Li opens with the third sonata, establishing a big golden tone from the outset; he points up the architecture of this episodic work with leisurely assurance, and if his tempi seem leisurely even in the fast movements, that is because he brings out every detail with pellucid clarity. How did such quintessentially romantic playing emerge from the heart of China? Don't even ask: just marvel, and enjoy. -Michael Church.

Review Vaughan Williams - A London Symphony (original version) / London Symphony Orchestra:Penned between 1911 and 1913 and first heard in May 1914, Vaughan Williams's A London Symphony was dedicated to the memory of George Butterworth (whose ravishing 1913 idyll The Banks of Green Willow opens proceedings here). It's this original version that Richard Hickox and the LSO champion so eloquently on this sumptuous-sounding Chandos issue-and a very different beast it is from VW's final revision of 1933. For starters, there's more than a quarter-of-an-hour of extra material, much of it genuinely inspired and brimful of wondrous poetry. VW's scoring, too, was never more colourful and it's surely not too fanciful to detect many a foreshadowing of Holst's The Planets in particular. More significantly, the work takes on a darker, tragic dimension (nowhere more potently perhaps than in the slow movement) and there's an astonishing passage in the expanded epilogue that even anticipates the opening movement of the 1921 Pastoral Symphony. In hindsight, VW made all the right decisions (the scherzo's second half, haunting though it is, pales next to the shuddering intensity of the revised coda) but no one should miss the opportunity to experience his original thoughts in all their epic sweep and tingling vitality. Utterly compulsive listening then and a "must buy" if ever there was one. -Andrew Achenbach.
