Review Titanic 10th Anniversary 2CD Edition / Original Soundtrack:

It's just the two separate albums in a cardboard sleeve. No more. No less. But at least this way it does offer a better opportunity for appraising the entire score. Packaged together the discs seem to insist on being played one after the other. As you do so, you realise two things. Firstly, the sequel album is nowhere near as considerately sequenced as the original-stylistically you're adrift at sea, subject to the peaks and troughs of dramatic orchestral music one minute and an "Oirish" jig the next. Secondly, that we were cheated by the absence of much of the material the first time around. The bottom line is that the two could easily be pared down into one. You can only assess this for yourself by possessing both, however, making this by default the best presentation of the Oscar-winning score. [+]

Review Shostakovich: The String Quartets / Universal Classics:

The Fitzwilliam Quartet is English by birth but shows a lot of Russian soul in these works, which were recorded in consultation with the composer. Their technique is flawless, their immersion in the music total, their interaction with one another and with the music spontaneous and intense. Priced competitively with the Borodin Quartet, they do not have any added attraction to match the Piano Quintet in that set, but this close-up stereo recording is significantly better. Highlights of the set include the relaxed, folk-flavoured No. 1; the tense, autobiographical No. 8, which recalls the terrors of World War II, quotes a lot of Shostakovich's earlier works, and mourns for the "victims of fascism and war"; the contrasts of quiet beauty and fierce intensity in No. 10; and the bold structure of No. 15, Shostakovich's last quartet, in which he looks at death, steadily and without blinking. -Joe McLellan.

Review Brassed Off: film score [SOUNDTRACK] / RCA:

Mark Herman's tragi-comedy set among the fictional coal-mining community of Grimley revolves around the exploits of the local colliery's brass band and its struggle to survive imminent pit closure. Among the film's virtues are a bitter-sweet (with an emphasis on "bitter") script, strong performances all round-including Pete Postlethwaite, Tara Fitzgerald and Ewan McGregor-and a superb soundtrack. Grimley's real-life counterpart is the Penine town of Grimethorpe, and, entirely uncoincidentally, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band were chosen to perform the music. Having themselves survived pit closure to become one of the top brass bands in Britain, the Grimethorpe band know all about playing from the heart. But the script's subject-matter aside, the album is actually an uplifting, entertaining selection of classic "lollipops", including the Floral Dance, Colonel Bogey, and a meltingly good arrangement of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez ("That's Orange Juice to you", says Postlethwaite in the movie) for solo flugelhorn. Trevor Jones contributes an attractive and pleasingly low-key score, but it's the band tracks that are the real selling-point here, making Brassed Off an ideal introduction to popular brass band music. -Mark Walker.

Review The Very Best of Cleo Laine [BOX SET] / Cleo Laine:

Blessed with both a natural jazz instinct and an extraordinary range covering several octaves, Cleo Laine is one of the outstanding singers of our times. Her husky low notes and astonishing forays in the upper registers make her voice uniquely identifiable. She makes the most intelligent use of an eclectic span of material and her recordings are always filled with delightful surprises. The sweep of music in this remarkable collection reflects all that and her lyrics here have been composed by some of the best writers of the times, starting with one W. Shakespeare, who has three of his best numbers-"O Mistress Mine", "It Was A Lover And His Lass" and "Shall I Compare Thee To A Summers Day"-treated with imagination and grace. Standards by Arlen and Alec Wilder rub shoulders with compositions by Laine's husband John Dankworth. The latter's "Dunsinane Blues" is a swinging and delightful exercise in Shakespearean gore and ghosts and his setting of an Auden poem is written with taste and purpose. Guests include guitarist John Williams-a most delicate partnership with Laine on three tracks-and pianist Dudley Moore. -Steve Voce.
